Hi guys new here and first thread. Buying new bike in June. Bikeless first time in 36 years. Really love the look and reports of mt10, got a test ride next Thursday. Need a bike that's fun but can tour also. Thinking and hoping the mt10 touring will meet my needs. What's your experience on touring on them?

We don't have the touring edition in the states, but the OEM upgrades for the touring edition (soft panniers,a pannier frame, a screen, GPS bracket, hand guards and comfort seat) are all made quite frequently by members here and in other communities, and I think they're all substantial value-adds. Would like to see heated grips as standard for a model like this, but you can't get everything.
I will say the #1 complaint with the MT-10 is fuel economy -- particularly if you put an exhaust on the bike and tune it for performance. The touring edition does nothing to improve on that figure, so you can expect to stop every 100-120 miles (I think I've seen some people stretch it to 150, but that's ballsy). That's sub-optimal for touring, but if you're okay with it I'd say it's going to be highly recommended here.

as much as like my MT, i bought it for the fun factor and traded my more touring bike (multistrada) for it. my POV is that there are much better options out there that are touring or sport touring designed from the factory than the MT. By the time you have spent the money to make touring worthy you probably could have boght a better suited bike. I guess that in the end it depends how much touring will u be doing vs how much sport driving you will do.

Thanks guys. In the UK the touring version is the basic bike with a different seat, screen, panniers, hand guards and sat nav equipment. This can all be bought over the counter but it's a lot cheaper buying it as a package. Appreciate the are better tourers out there, but I want a bike that will thrill me and is fun - and I can also tour on. I suppose a good question is - are they practical enough to ride 4-6 hours a day?

No problem riding 4 to 6 hours a day, I do that regularly. Fuel consumption is the big issue, it's not good. The -10 has all the attributes of being a good, fun sports tourer except for the lousy mileage. No matter how Yamaha packages it up the whole shebang is let down by the amount of fuel it sucks down. If you can live with stopping every few hours for a fuel break it's a top drawer choice. I'm ready to get off and stretch my legs after 100 miles or so so it works for me.

Cheers evitzee Planning on a tour of Europe in the summer. Looking to avoid the big motorways, only doing max 200 miles a day - it's a long lazy tour with no fixed schedule, going where the wind blows us. Stopping every 90 mins is fine. I'm happy to accept the fuel economy issues, just wanted to hear from others who tour them regarding comfort really. Mine will have the comfier touring seat on it

It fits the bill perfectly. If im doing 400-600 miles per day i will use it but more than that i use the fjr. If i didnt have the fjr id have no probs using the fz10 and making sure i had a few fuel cannisters in place. I have a 1 gallon tank thats in a square form i use for dual sport touring. Straps to my dry bag well and gives another 30-38 miles if i need it. Havent yet but i have the flash from 2wd works and a graves slip on. No probs making 140-150 miles highway cruising thus far. Hit 136 miles the other day and had .8 gals left. 80-85 highway cruising.

I If you are going to be carrying a pillion i would do some research on that side of things, as the MT 10 has a very uncomfortable perch, with very high pillion pegs.

No I'm going solo. Don't like carrying passengers at all. Looking forward to test ride next week

Just back from a couple of days of 2Up down south of Sydney. Did about 350-400km per day with decent stops. Comfort seat is a must. My wife finds the bikes stock perch to be comfortable (she’s 5foot7). Installed rear carrier, top box and backrest for this trip and well worth the spend. FYI... rear carrier weighs 4kg 50l top box weighs 4kg Backrest 1kg 50l top box with rear carrier has a max carry capacity of 5kg Yamaha don’t recommend their 50l top box and saddle bags be installed together. “Please note - the Top Case is a stand-alone product and it is not recommended that it is installed and used with the available Yamaha Side Cases“

Thanks for that. We are in gallons and miles here so by my calculations that is 37 miles per gallon which is fairly decent

37 is high compared to most reports. If you search "MT-10 MPG" on google this forum will yield a good number of user-reported figures. Most people report =<35 for pure highway. fz10.org/thread/738/mpg-observationsI would not go in expecting to get 37 mpg unless you're riding EXTREMELY conservatively.

Thanks for that. We are in gallons and miles here so by my calculations that is 37 miles per gallon which is fairly decent Imperial gallons or US gallons? If you are using Imp gallons that would mean about 31 mpg using US gal.
