I see the pics now. What a mess. Is the fitting still in place on the engine or have you tried to remove it? It's supposedly only torqued to 70 Nm but who knows what gorilla torqued it to at the engine assembly stage and it may not be a simple task to get it off. And that is one part you don't want to mess up (like rounding off the points) which would really cause you a problem. Not sure what size that hex head is, 25mm or so, so if you do it yourself you'll need the proper socket. I'd still be inclined to request the dealer to transport your bike to their shop and let them deal with it as there are just too many opportunities for things to go wrong. I've installed many oil filters on cars and bikes and can never remember ever having an issue with cross threading, they always spin right on.

Yeah, it's a 27 mm hex and I have a socket in that size and a (high quality) torque wrench covering 70Nm. I agree, it should be easy to remove and that it seems possible it got over-torqued when the filter was "installed." My plan is to try to get it off myself, but to fight with the dealer, rather than the union bolt if it really seems stuck!

Yikes, I just saw the updated photos, what a f#@kn mess. In my opinion there is no way you could have caused this, never seen anyone cross thread a bolt when removing one, looks like it was cross threaded at time of installation. It's a wonder it never leaked oil. When I swapped mine over I used the same method as you steves, filter cap with 17mm socket wrench. Hope you you get it sorted out, repost the result so we can keep it for a reference.

That is awful... While I trust the competency of a dealer mech as far as I can throw him, I'd have a hard time believing that anyone would muscle a cross threaded filter down to the gasket. Hopefully this is due to some automated assembly process like someone mentioned before.
I've removed oil filter unions before and its easiest to do with an impact gun if the filter mount is in a tight spot. Looks to me like you can use a socket and long bar here though.
While I agree that you should be able to have this taken care of under warranty, the trade off between costs saved and time/effort spent arranging transport and waiting for them to work on it isn't worth it. You were going to change the oil and filter anyway, so you're really only out the cost of the filter union and some time. Maybe you can talk the dealer into ordering the union for you? Raise concerns with Yamaha and they might hook you up with a sweet accessory discount or something.

The union bolt arrived in yesterday's mail. I'm pleased to report that the old one unwound easily and it was trivial to install the new one, so I'm back on the road! Not the first oil change experience I'd have hoped for, but it was a happy ending.

Been there once with another bike and used 2 self tapping screws drilled into the filter then wrenched it off. The FZ filter turned off by hand.

Occasionally I have an issue with that type of oil filter wrench. If it slips I lay a shop towel flat across it, then put it on the filter. It works most of the time.

I thought it was common knowledge that all new vehicles, cars and bikes alike, have their oil filter installed by gorillas..
