What's your biggest fill? I'm hoping we can get several reports of actual tank fills so we can understand just how far we can ride.
For context, I was on a ride yesterday and had filled the tank right to the bottom of the metal insert and reset both the average mpg and the trip odometer. At 133 miles, just before I stopped for gas, I think I felt some fuel starvation. My reported average fuel economy was 31.1 mpg so, with a 4.5 gallon tank, I should have been able to ride 31.1 mpg * 4.5 gallons = 140 miles. I filled the tank to the neck with 4.2 gallons of gas.
So the question on my mind is: is the effective capacity really 4.2, rather than 4.5 gallons? What's the most others have put in (especially if you've run out of gas)?

Probably around the same. 4.2 or something like that with a fairly empty tank. That remaining .3 liters is about 5 cups or about a liter of gas if I remember my conversions right.
I presume that the filler neck in the tank is below the top of the actual tank, so when you "fill" the tank to "full", there's still space between the filler neck and the top of the tank. This space is important because gas will expand with heat and the air inside would react to elevation as well so you need that little extra space to accommodate for this possible expansion and/or changing of air pressure. If you filled the tank completely full, you would start pushing gas out of the overflow hose if it started expanding because it wouldn't have anywhere to expand.
So I don't imagine you would be able to get a totally full tank with a regular fill up and you wouldn't want a totally full tank anyway.

Here is what I posted last year regarding a 'deep fill' on my bike.....
"................. My reserve clicked in at 128 miles and at that point I was about 25 miles to the nearest gas station so I set the cruise control at 65 mph and rolled in to the station at 152.9 miles on the odo and it took 4.243 gallons of premium, an average of 36.0 mpg for the tank. If the specs are correct and the tank is a true 4.5 gallons I was getting pretty close to draining it with only about 9 miles of range left. I wasn't babying it but I wasn't murdering it either, pretty average pace for an afternoon out in the country. No matter how you cut it this bike is really not suitable as a sports tourer as you would be stopping every couple of hours for fuel. A break every couple of hours is not a bad idea but I wouldn't want to be looking for fuel that often. This bike really needs to be enjoyed for what it can do, just plan your fuel stops accordingly. Unless you live in remote areas this shouldn't be too much of a problem."

Here in the UK the tank is spec'd as 17 litres (3.739 gallons according to google). I ran it dry and had to push it to the nearest gas station. Thankfully it was down hill most the way. I filled her up to 16.96 litres. My average is 34 mpg but between my last two fills I've managed 190 miles but that did include a winter ride out 😉

Ah, just what I was hoping to read, thanks, mrcdharwood!
According to Google, 17 liters is 4.5 American gallons, so it looks like Yamaha's stated capacity is accurate and usable!

Gotta be careful on the gallon conversion (Imperial vs US gallon). One US gallon is equal to 3.7584 liters. The UK Imperial gallon is 4.5461 liters. Almost all gallon discussions here relate to US gallons, not Imperial gallons.
The European Service Manual for the MT-10 (and the US version for the FZ-10) gives capacities as follows:
Fuel tank capacity (17 L, 4.5 US gal, 3.7 Imp gal) Fuel reserve (4.0 L, 1.06 US gal, 0.88 Imp gal)
In my experience you have just about 1 US gal in the tank when the fuel light begins to flash (just as Yamaha says), so plan your stops accordingly. If you judiciously use the throttle at that point and keep your speeds down you can milk 30-35 miles out of the last gallon (stock tune).
I would NOT recommend riding any bike to full empty, the fuel pump in the tank needs to sit in fuel to keep temps down, running it to completely empty may allow it to be damaged. I wouldn't take the chance unless you have no choice. I try to get fuel within ten miles of going on reserve.

Roaming through Montana on the way back from Sturgis, travelling back roads to White Sulphur springs I decided to chance it and got 168.6 miles on the MT-10 and when I fueled up was able to put 4.064 us gallons in so I'm thinking it was pretty damn close to dry at this time.

Must have babying it at about 70mph or 5k rpm. That is the sweet spot for mpg.

BEST Km/L i ever got is 18.8! (riding with new rider at mostly constant 110km/h for almost 90km...) My Average consumption is 14.5 km/L, Worst is 11.7 km/L - Stock exhaust and air filter, no tuning. Max i ever filled my tank was 16.54 Liters.

Hi Willl84, 4.064 US Gallon is around 15.4 Liters, you still had 1.6 Liters (0.43 US Gallon) to completely dry... BTW... that is very good mileage you got!
