So the stock shock spring is fit to be a paper weight?
I've been reading different things from different people and was curious what the consensus on this forum is. Some folks have said they weight 240-260 in gear and have never bottomed out the rear, others claim to weigh 180lbs and bottom the rear out in every corner and on every bump on its stiffest setting...
My Street Triple R runs 12.6kg/mm (700-ish lb/in) stock in the rear which works well for me. Hard to believe Yamaha would stick such a crappy spring on the back of the FZ10.

I'm about 225 geared up. I've not bottomed out once, and it's very compliant when I push it in the curves. I just read an article in which the R1S and R1M were tested and timed by two riders at Willow Springs, the were less than .4 seconds apart. The S has the same shock as the FZ, our spring is heavier. The M is Ohlins. Personally, I think pepople exaggerate the differences on street bikes. My suspension seems to be dialed in pretty well.

I'm upgrading to a 475lb/in shock which is stiffer than stock. A far cry from 700 ish.
The bottom line is road surfaces. Canyon carving in Cali and Tail of the Dragon are like glass compared to my roads. My typical 100 mile day rides are full of surface cracks, dips, bumps, frost boils, and crappy patch jobs, plus the irregular slab heights every 20' on our cement freeways. I set my rear sag throughout its range incrementally for consecutive 100 mile rides. I used a tie wrap on the shock piston rod reset for every ride and there was only one precise setting where it wasn't bottomed out when I got home. I weigh 190 lbs geared up. An added point is that until I used the tie wrap, I had no idea I was bottoming out, although I knew the rides were pretty rough.
Unless your roads are smooth, the shock is definitely undersprung. I'm spending $1200 on a new shock, because I'm tired of getting hammered on every ride. I have every reason to believe it will make my rides much more enjoyable and worth it in the end.

The stock fork springs are 0.93 kg/mm and are the same as the R1 and R1S. For general all around usage, this is a good rate for someone in the 200-220 lb range (in full riding gear). You might need more or the track.
Out back, the 470 lb/in spring is also the same as the R1 and R1S. The spring might actually be rated a bit stiffer than the R1, but stock springs typically have a wide tolerance range. So in effect, they rate out in the same ballpark. This rate is decent for someone in the 175-190 (ish) range (again, geared up).
Can't compare shock spring rates to other bikes. The rear suspension's leverage varies from design to design. As an example, my VFR800 weighs about 50 lbs more than this bike, but uses a 1000 lb/in spring. More than twice the spring rate.
If you're happy with the suspension, you luck out! For the rest of us, it's obvious when things need to change.

Thanks for the replies. I'll just have to keep it in the back of my mind I guess. I'll be around 280 with gear so a re-spring will probably be in order regardless. The bike fits my 6'6 self pretty damn well though I have to say, and the front end feels pretty good stock which is nice.

I am 175 lbs geared up and just installed some Stoltec Moto 0.85 fork springs. I have not set the sag yet, just used the settings for the stock forks. It is no longer a jackhammer riding thru the craters and mountains in the Missouri roads any more but there is a little wobble thru the bumpy corners. I will get a friend to help with sag to get the preload in the ballpark, then do some tests with comp & reb to see how much better I can get out of the stock valving.

Came here to say I finally got my z that i ordered in March, what took forever was Cannon Racecraft www.cannonracecraft.com/ out of Oklahoma City, made springs for me as I weigh 350#, I didnt have the suspension revalved, just resprung, and so far its amazing. Just wanted everyone to know that Cannon now has the specs available and can crank out springs!

I'll chime in. I'm 5'11" 140lbs. The bike felt like a rock for the past 3000 miles. I got it resprung today at Catalyst Reaction Tuning.
Front Springs: 230mm 8.5N (OEM is 220mm, 9.1N) Rear Spring: 155mm 80N (OEM is 160mm, 85N/88N [disputed])
They also adjusted the preload, rebund and compression settings for me. Holy crap, this is what this bike was supposed to feel like! Defintely needs a brake upgrade now. I had no idea why everyone was saying the brakes sucked on the FZ10. Now I know it's because my forks weren't compressing at all lol. Good to go now!
