For the Fluorescent wheels you MUST use a base coat #1043 and a clear coat to get the correct color match. I use the matte (eggshell) clear coat for the wheels.

I would like to know why? wouldnt the touch up pen already have the base and the tint mixed together? Many automotive finishes today are three stage processes; base coat, color coat, clear coat. I'm not a photo chemist but fluorescent colors present a particular challenge because of their brightness, they need a light color as a base to maximize their fluorescence. Hence, a base coat of a neutral shade is required before the color coat is applied, and then a clear coat is required for durability. I bought the base color, the fluorescent color and the matte clear coat from ColorRite. When my rear tire was changed I had just a couple of small nicks that I wanted to cover. The underlying color of the rim is dark so applying the fluorescent color over it wouldn't work. So I put on a couple of thin coats of the #1043 base, a couple of thin coats of the #1510 Light Leaf Green Solid 6 color coat, and finished it off with the matte clear coat. Absolutely a perfect match. It is what it is, I think the three small jars of paint cost $60 delivered which will last a lifetime. Sounds expensive but worth it to keep the fluoro wheels looking like new. One of my fears with getting the fluoro wheels was keeping them free of nicks and scratches from tire changes....having the proper touch up paints on my work bench eases my mind.

Does anyone know if I need the clear coat for the raven black on the gas tank? or will the touch up pen work just fine without a clear coat?
