Some guy outside cyclegear was eye fucking my bike and was asking what I plan on doing to it, and I told him I had a Yoshi Alpha slip on coming in (I'm honestly doing it because I cant even hear the stock can below like 8-9k rpms over wind noise with earplugs, seems a shame) a few other things and that I was planning to get the ECU reflashed on a dyno. He was telling me, as an esteemed R1 owner (he was a little superior about it) that the can makes no difference and all the sound is killed in the midpipe, and to wait for that or a full system before reflashing. I told him about the stupid detune and the limiter but he was adamant.
What have been your experiences? Did a slip on make a noticeable difference? He said he got a new titanium mid for 200 bucks but the cheapest I can find are also stainless steel and like 4-500$.
Thanks for your time!

Don't think your gunna hear much difference with just a slip on. You need the midpipe

I have a rather odd setup I guess. Kind of the poor mans exhaust....I actually really like the look of the stock can and angle. I bought my FZ used and the guy previously had replaced the mid pipe, which is the catalytic converter on these. Being that the most restriction is found there. Its LOUD. lol. I run ear buds and music on the road so it helps, but this thing is loud. Big downside is the stock baffle, which I replaced with the A&R baffle kit. Before with the stock baffle it was predictably ill sounding. Kind of raspy cheap sounding in my opinion. Now it's much deeper in tone, lowers the tone I guess you could say. Sounds like any slip on and mid combo I think. Not a high end Austin Racing sound or anything, not that nice, but still...... This offseason I'll send off the ECU for a flash. That will take care of many injection imperfections I hope. The baffle is a PITA by the way but well worth it!

By chance have you had time to make a video of your set up now that you have the baffle kit?

Another reason why the slip-on doesn't make a difference in exhaust note is because the stock one is already a straight through design. I found it to be louder and raspier than the yoshimura alpha slip on when both were mounted to a mid pipe. All the sound is killed in the cat/muffler box under the bike.
Edit: Also, the exup stays with the cat box. In contrast, if you look at the r6, an aftermarket slip on deletes the exup as well. A slip on on a r6 makes a pretty big difference in sound. Just food for thought.

I bought a 2 bros slip-on for my R6 and felt like it was nice but mostly cosmetic (although there was SOME change in sound) after installation. I would definitely put a DP on this for the weight savings and performance enhancement as afaik it's one of the areas where they cut costs relative to the R1.

Just to clarify, I don't have pics but as others have stated...the stock muffler has about half of the length used as a baffle, the other half is a straight pipe. I.E. all the restriction is in the cat or midpipe whichever you want to call it. The stock muffler has so little baffling in it because the majority of restriction lies in the midpipe/cat. Video to come tonight of the A&R. I'll snap a pic of the stock baffle too so you can see what I mean.

Sorry, I threw the old baffle away. Only half of the pipe that extended down had holes in it though. I was pretty surprised, I had hoped honestly that the baffle kit would quiet it down more. I does but not very much. The main difference is the tone, which now sounds great.

Sounds good. Wish videos did exhaust systems justice. Honestly doesn't seem super loud in the video.

I know its hard to tell, for those that want some rumble but not loud loud I'd try the baffle kit and keep the stock mid pipe. Once you take out that cat though, not much can be done to quiet this thing down. lol. I like it personally, just have to crank the headphones to drown out some of the noise.

I've a Graves slip-on. (I've no interest in a full exhaust replacement) Granted, at idle and low rpm, the exhaust note change (throaty-er) is very subtle. But... once I start hammering it above 5k, it's a pretty significant difference. Sounds decidely more brutish... i.e. Sounds more like it looks, if you dig my meaning.

So if I get a midpipe am I gunna need a servo buddy?

I have the Leo Vince with stock silencer. Love the sound. I have also purchased the A & R baffle kit but am unsure on it. Don't want to ruin a good thing. Running the 2WDW flash. Not sure if I would need a reflash with the new baffle kit. One strictly cool thing about the baffle kit is that when you look down the silencer, you just know nothing is being held back. And I know in some factual, numbers driven world, that isn't necessarily always a good thing. But it looks 😎!
