Thanks for the info! I just checked the bike in the garage and it has an '8H' filter on it, so it's no good. I'm taking the bike in tomorrow for a new rear tire and then when I get back home I will be changing the oil and filter. I'm going to go with the Yamaha filter this time. I also have two KN-204 filters in the garage, but they have a different style date code than shown on their website so I guess they are ok. Perhaps I'll eventually switch back to the K&N because I like the nut feature. But I'm a little spooked right now.

With few exceptions there really is no benefit to the nut that you don't get with one of these and there's no need to pay $7 more for it. Ducatis with recessed filters are one example that comes to mind but a cap wrench works just as well on those. Buy a filter for the work it does for the months its on the bike, not the 2 minutes to take it on and off.

Buy a filter for the work it does for the months its on the bike, not the 2 minutes to take it on and off. Actually, they are pretty cheap, $9.81 today on Amazon (delivered, if you are Prime member). IF you have a good cap wrench, and IF the filter hasn't previously been put on too tight, you shouldn't have any problems. But I think everybody has run across a filter that just won't budge with a cap wrench forcing you to resort to other methods to get it off, sometimes drastic methods have to be used. The welded on 17mm nut makes for easy installation and removal. I've not heard that K&N filters are any worse than the other filters on the market, and this includes a Yamaha OEM. I switched to an OEM filter for my oil change today, but I have two K&N's in the garage that aren't in the recall window. I would like to go back to them for my next oil change, they are just easier to work with in my experience.
I drained the oil out of the used K&N filter and will wait to either get reimbursed for the filter or get a free replacement from K&N.

That Tekton pliers looks like a good tool, I'll pick one of those up when I next remove the filter on the bike.

HiFlo Makes filters with the nut, and they used to manufacture for K&N before K&N outsources and started having problems.
We've personally seen 5 K&N failures in the last year, won't go near them.

As long as K&N recognizes there was a problem (they have) and they correct the manufacturing method (they claim they have), I would still use K&N filters. It seems there was that window last year where the defective filters were made, but after that they seem to be ok. I would be very concerned if K&N claimed nothing was wrong and they weren't going to change the process. K&N filters now come from Thailand, but so did the Yamaha OEM filter I just put on the bike, and I suspect they are made in the same factory. Stuff happens but as long as they figure out what was wrong and fix it I'll still use them in the future. The K&N I just removed from the bike was one of the bad batch, but it didn't give me any problems in the 2,500 miles it was in use. I still have two new ones in the garage but they aren't the recalled ones so I'll seriously consider using them the next time I change the filter.

Update on this recall. There is an email link on the recall page, shoot them a note and they'll send you a form to fill out. You can either get a replacement or a refund (if you have the receipt). You have to send them a pic of the filter code, and a pic of the KN-204 designation on the filter. I asked for a replacement as I didn't have the receipt, got a replacement filter today via UPS. I suspect most people won't do this recall, either they won't take the action to do the recall process, or the filter has been used and discarded already.
I feel K&N have identified the problem and fixed the production process, unless there are more field issues with these newer filters I'll switch back to them, I've had good experience with K&N over the years.

Just sent for my replacement. I have used K&N for years and never had any issues. Glad their stepping up making it right.
