my -10 has 600 miles on it.. after the first few hundred i'd get a notchy downshift here and there..where it wouldn't want to really downshift and i'd have to bang at it a couple times. Well this morning on my way to work, I literally couldn't get out of 4th gear and downshift. I had to push my bike out of the road and sit there for a solid minute trying to finesse it to get it to drop down into gear. Finally after I was able to, it happened to me two more times, but i was able to get it to go down in gear before having to pull off the road. Then, like nothing ever happened, it was completely fine after that. Only happens at 4th gear and downward.
Any ideas? I've seen suggestions on chain adjustment but it just doesn't make any sense to me. Could it already need a chain adjustment after only 600 miles? Yes I have aftermarket levers (ASV), but there are no issues with them as I tested that by just taking my hand off the clutch and having the bike stall out (and it also upshifts fine, and downshifts fine until I get to 4th gear, I could literally shift to 6th, then back down to 4th fine, then it would get stuck).

I have no idea what could be causing that issue. I would have the dealer check it out.

Check the shift linkage, try adjusting it a little bit. I had a similar issue with a different bike and it turned out that the shift linkage was in a bad position that was making downshifts really hard. A slight adjustment and it was fixed.

I actually reached out to the Sales Manager I bought the bike from and he suggested the same thing, saying to adjust the linkage, not sure which way but I will mess with it later and report back. Thanks for the reply.

Check the freeplay at your clutch lever first. Then measure the deflection in your chain. Specs are in the manual and easy to do yourself. Both loosened up a lot at 600 and the chain will loosen again at 1200 miles.

yeah good call because I did recheck the tension at the clutch lever, and guess what - no more issues (well at least yesterday). Its weird how much it had loosened up. I will keep this thread updated just in case it returns to normal but i'm assuming that was the issue.
I sound stupid but glad it was something easy. Just didn't think it was that since i literally never touched the adjustment lol

Glad I could help. Most people have complained about the crunchy gearbox but after 2k ish the trans shifts smooth.

FYI, I was having issues, or what I perceived as issues since I got mine. I bought it with 3700 on it, seemed like it shifted really hard, very notchy, and required alot of effort at the lever. I've had many bikes, and worked/wrenched at a dealer for a long while so I have a bit of experience with different models and quarks etc. I have since doubled the miles, installed a yamaha quickshifter, adjusted the linkeage a few ways, and this is what I found: It has gotten much better as time goes on, I switched to amsoil synthetic, and keep a good eye on chain tension. Most bikes have a kind of sweet spot I found where they like chain tension and shift better. This bike seems pretty affected by it, think tension is equal to tension on the counter shaft. Obviously clutch cable free play is important too;) Glad its gotten better for you!

Roninser, thank you for the contribution. I just had to update this thread because my previous comment about it being the clutch lever was false.
After I had adjusted the clutch all was well for about a day. Then, same thing started happening. So I headed over to my buddies shop, and upon inspection and just moving the shifter, it was creaking really bad. Ends up that one of the pivot ball joints on the linkage had absolutely no grease on it, which was causing it to bind up. I took everything apart, re-greased with waterproof sealant, and reassembled. I haven't had an issue since (knock on wood lol).
