He says the steering locked up. That seems unlikely somehow. I am glad and amazed that he survived, it could have been a lot worse.

Steering did not lock up. That is him trying to save face. He target fixed and messed up.
Glad he is ok but he needs to not ride above his skill set.

Target fixation, case closed. He wasn't going that fast but looked (stared/fixated) at the edge of the road, panicked, braked and rode right off. Even a moderately experienced rider would have just looked to his exit point, leaned into the corner and safely steered his way through, no big deal. Glad he survived but he needs to either stay off a motorcycle or reassess his skill level and get some training before getting on another machine. An FZ-10 was NOT the right bike for his skill level although he probably would have done the same thing on any bike. I try to practice something I learned many years ago in this situation: LOOK (to where you want to go), LEAN (the bike) and BELIEVE (that the bike and you will make it), and stay off the brakes. I've never had it fail in any sort of situation like this.

Harley guys die from target fixation all the time up here in the mountains. The Lowman loop in Idaho probably has tons of Harley parts and screaming eagle belt buckles along the cliffs on the side of the road around the whole loop.

Honey, I'm real sorry for going to the titty bar after work. The steering locked up as I was riding by, not my fault!

...says he'll never, ever get on another motorcycle. Yeah, good thing. Better for him and the rest of us.
In the immortal words of Dirty Harry... "A man's got to know his limitations."
Don't get me wrong... I understand that sh*t happens. Mistakes are made. But if you can't come to terms with the fact that YOU screwed the pooch... Then be glad you survived and stick to 4 wheels. Or bicycles.

Yeah, that was just up here by me (looks like Latigo Cyn. Rd) ...he target fixated pretty clearly. I'm glad he survived, ...and since he didn't learn anything from the crash, I'm glad he's decided to quit riding. Poor FZ-10.
