Hello gentlemen, Replaced a tire on the rear today, pads came out of rear caliper. Put them back with spring. Seems to be in correct orientation? But now when on the rear brake it feels fine when lightly on it but when you bear down on it I can feel a clunk like sensation and hear a noise like a grind type noise. Like the pads are shuttering or something. This can’t be ABS can it? I checked torque on all bolts too I’m a bit stumped Brake caliper spring was inserted with thicker side on plunger side. Can’t think of anything else it could be. Any help Is very welcome!! 2020 MT-10 , 3k on the odometer. Thank you!

Did you slot the rear brake caliber into the swingarm correctly? If you didn't it can actually move back and forth and may be the source of the clunk. ABS is more of a pulsating vs a clunking. My money's on something is wrong. best bet is to take everything back apart and whip out the service manual and go step by step, both for removing and replacing the rear brake pads and for reinstalling the tire. I would try to push the brake piston in as much as you can when you remove and then reseat the brake pads. And take care to put the brake pads in correctly with that metal clip piece. I've screwed that up before myself.
I know it's expensive but the pitbull tire wedge is a godsend if you change your own tires. Even without a pitbull stand, it's worth the $80 or whatever it may cost now. Definitely a great Christmas gift from the wifey. 😀

Thank you for the quick response, I feel the same it must be something out of alignment. It was just high hopes it was ABS but it doesn’t feel right I know what ABS feels like.
I will disassemble again and see if I can find anything. The bracket you mentioned I didn’t double check just the caliper once I heard the noise I removed it to check. It’s just strange it is perfectly smooth until you really bear down on the pedal.
Those little clips are not my favorite part of a brake job lol.
That pitbull tire lift is SWEET! I want it. I have 2 pitbull sets but haven’t seen that before.

It's so great. Made what was sometimes a 30-45 minute battle of endurance full of frustration to a fairly simple and quick procedure.

Old thread revival : I have fully taken the rear wheel off and put it back together and still have the clunk the caliper bracket is for sure slotted into the swing arm fully. Any ideas? Or I’ll be taking it into the shop for something probably really stupid. No signs of wear or movement when taken apart The rear caliper does wiggle a little but I noticed all my others bikes do this as well. Any help is very very welcome Thank you!

Money well spent when messing with axels. I use it with my woodcraft lifts. Sorry wish I had an answer to your clunking issue.

Dumbest thing I did on a FZ6 was forget to put the bearing spacer back in after getting a new tire. Would ride fine for 500 miles then start clanking. Replaced the rear wheel bearing twice before realizing it.

Based on the sound starting with initially taking the rear wheel off, I still feel like something is amiss with the reinstall. Did you go step by step with the service manual? Maybe consider taking it to a shop? Make sure all spacers are in the right place. Make sure cush drive was reinstalled and done correctly?
Only other idea I have, what about your chain and sprockets? Are they worn? Could be clunking from the chain skipping teeth.

I appreciate your info, I did follow the manual step by step and tire was replaced but I didn’t touch the cush drive. It all looked correct. Chain and sprocket are both in good shape. I will take it to a shop and update here with what they find out. It’s so weird it only does it when braking hard on the rear. Light pedal all feels fine. Strange I can’t find anyone else experiencing this before lol

Take a pic of your setup including caliper brace to swingarm and pads. That would help in understanding what the problem would be.

I got nothing from the pictures. Everything looks good.
Maybe it is ABS? I'm assuming it only happens when you're on the rear brake? Is it happening under light braking? Can you duplicate it on the rear stand (Don't do this with the bike on, it'll throw a code)?
Your bike seems to be too new to be something like a wheel bearing or warped rotor.
How about the chain? Not too tight or not too loose?

Chain is adjusted to spec, well that’s partially good news lol I can’t get to replicate on the stand (not running) it is a new tire so maybe abs is kicking in easier than with the old one? Only happens when I solidly get on the rear. Thanks for taking a look

Only happens when I solidly get on the rear. It's the ABS. Pull the ABS fuse and do the same and see what happens. I notice that the rear ABS kicks in on my 2019 way sooner than I expect it to. I've gotten harder on rears on other bikes and not had any lockup, maybe it's just a suspension geometry thing on these bikes.

Probably would be good to know where the fuse is anyways, someday I’d like to take her to the track. That’s what had me so confused is my rear brake on my ZX6R you can get on hard with no abs chatter or anything.

Hi Oni, I will get some pictures from my MT10 (Rear Brake) and Wheel for you to refer this weekend. See below ref. diagram to find ABS system.
