Had an engine failure 6 months ago on my 2018 mt10 Yamaha is covering it thankfully. The shop told me all they were waiting for was the crank shaft and they wouldn’t have it till march 24th I called randomly today and was told they received the crank. Can’t imagine how long they have actually had it and never updated me on it.
Now they are telling me now that they have the crank they need to visually look at it to determine what bearings to order. Something about the crank and bearings being color coded/numbered. I can’t imagine that they make multiple 2018 mt10 cranks and multiple sets of bearings for said crank. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Does seem strange but I don't have enough expertise to know that much when it comes to the internals like that. Seems like just typical dealship bullshit.

Thanks! He's correct. The bearings are different thicknesses. You use stuff called plastigage to check the clearance and get the correct bearings. See the linked video below. Does seem strange but I don't have enough expertise to know that much when it comes to the internals like that. Seems like just typical dealship bullshit. It's not BS: Partzilla parts lising: www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcycle/2018/mt10-mt10jl/crankshaft-pistonNotice P/N's 4 and 9: Here's the breakdown for the sizes for the rod bearings: And for the crank bearings: So yes, they need to spend time doing inspection to check clearances and install the correct bearings. It's not a "toss it in and ship it" kinda thing when it comes to crankshafts and connecting rods. It's so that you can have tolerances in the manufacturing of the rods and crank and they don't all have to be EXACTLY the same size. Here's the MT-10 Service manual: drive.google.com/file/d/1oBbHZxAv4k8al8sPiKlOTy_2urWQVyi8/view?usp=sharingThe procedure for using plastigage on the rod bearings starts at page 356. Crankshaft procedure starts on page 365.

Thank you for the response! Sad thing is they told me the only thing they were waiting on was the crankshaft to finish the rebuild then I found out today that they have had the crank for 3 weeks. 😔 very disappointed!

Yea that part is kinda shitty. A simple "Hi the crank came in but now we have to figure out bearing selection" phone call would have been nice

Maybe give your shop the benefit of the doubt? It could be that they meant it wasn't ready to be installed or they didn't mark it in their computers as received because they don't have all the parts to install it yet. Sounds like they are being thorough in their install and trying to get it right. They have to balance keeping you happy by getting the job done right and quickly, which isn't easy to do both at the same time. Especially when their customers are very enthusiastic about getting out on the road ASAP.

I worked as a Yamaha Motorcycle Parts guy for 16 odd years from 1990, both in a retail shop and eventually for the Importer/Distributor here in New Zealand. I like to say I speak fluent Yamaha. The crankcases, crankshaft journals and connecting rods are all colour coded at the time of manufacture. Using a table in the workshop manuals you select the appropriately coloured coded bearing shells for the crank and rod journals and order accordingly. It is a fact, as a Yamaha parts guy, unfortunately you have no idea what shells to order until you have those 3 components in front of you. Also, the shells are only available in thicknesses required to meet manufacturing tolerances. No regrinding Yamaha cranks. I hope this allows you to feel a bit better about your Yamaha dealer.
