I had a little woopsie yesterday and dropped the bike on its left side. The generator cover is now rashed up. Has anyone replaced it before? Do I need to drain the oil to change it? I'll be buying a new gasket too. Are there any surprises when changing them?

Generator is the stator, right?
You will have some oil leakage so be prepared to clean drips but you won't need to change your oil, maybe top it off. Obviously do this on a cold bike so you'll have less oil to deal with as most of the oil drains back down into the oil pan.
I have not dealt with the stator on this bike but on the Triumphs it was a little bit of a pain in the ass because of the magnetization would make it hard to line up the cover since the stator was bolted to the cover. Not sure how Yamaha does theirs. I did eventually get it but it was something where an extra set of hands could've helped.
You consider just putting an engine cover over it instead?

Yes, the stator is part of the generator. The workshop manual shows that the stator is bolted to the cover so it might be a tad fidly. It would be cheaper sticking a cover over it but I would have to eventually replace it anyway when it comes time to sell the bike.

You could always lay bike gently on its side on a pad and work it like that. No loss of oil.

You could just lean the bike over against the throttle and replace oil loss . Or just use the front stand with rear tire on the ground thats how I checked my new filter to see if it was working I lost a few ounces.

Did you drain the oil or just top it up? It's been almost 2 years and I can't remember clearly but I think I didn't have to drain the oil. I've attached the service manual pages and it doesn't mention draining oil so I'm thinking that you don't have to.
