Anything specific to look out for on these as tell tale signs of major issues besides the normal things to check? Sold my speed triple to buy one of these and a guy an hour away from me has a 2018 stock other than a power commander for 7500 with 8k miles on it. If not I’ll just check the usual things but it’s dead of winter here so would basically just be taking it out for a quick ride to make sure it goes through the gears ok/throttle is ok.
Was going to buy new but dealers around me are wanting 2k over book out the door even on last years models.
First post on here so feel free to yell at me for the new guy questions lol

I find the best is just to talk to the owner. I mean it may not help you much, but a bike with 15k miles should have had a new chain and sprockets, spark plugs, valves done (depending on bike), etc. IF you're dealing with an owner that gives you deer in headlights look, that bike wasn't taken care of. In your case, I believe this bike should have 2 oil changes done on it already, or nearing the second. Did the owner skip the 600 mile oil change? Is the factory filter still on it? How did they break in the bike?
Other thing is to just straight out ask them what they were using the bike for and how they rode it. I bought mine from an older Navy gentlemen that said he drove it back and forth to work. The chicken strips on the wheel confirmed.
As far as the bike, damage becomes obvious in the control areas or the cover areas. In crashes, people replace the major things like fairings but might skimp on the controls. Rashed edge of a break lever, or footpeg, etc. Even when you have case savers on a bike, a lot of time when a bike is crashed, the case saver will make an indent into the engine covers.
That's pretty much all I check. It really comes down to the conversation with me. Is what I'm being told, make sense with what I'm seeing.
Good luck, welcome to the forum, let us know how it goes.

Yeah that is good advice RedAndBlack, he said the dealer he bought it from has the service records and he had his 2nd oil change after the break oil change at 6k miles.
He has been upfront about it needing a new front and possibly rear tire, doesnt seem to dodge any questions and has sent a few videos of the bike which seems like a good sign. Just wasnt sure if there were any common problems with these. I pretty much only buy used bikes but man i just have bad luck with used. I do all the research and check everything but always seem to have some decently big issue after 100 miles or so unfortunately.. had a ninja 636 that died on me on the way home due to ECU issues, the speed triple had a gear issue etc just poor luck with used.
Id rather go new but i dont think its worth 5k+ dollars to buy one from a dealer just to have the one year warranty which they might find some way to weasel out of fixing something anyways. But if there arent any real common red flags to look out for that helps me make the decision easier.
@will84 i got about 3-4 quotes from dealers and all the quotes ive gotten including one that is a leftover 2020 have been for 14k+, they wanted 14.9k for the leftover 2020. Its insane, i am offering cash paid in full as well which is even more confusing to me.

When someone says they're paying cash the dealer makes no money on the financing. It's best to do the financing and just pay it off as far a numbers from a dealer go. $15k for a leftover that stickers for $13k is nuts lol. Especially on a bike that dealers aren't selling a ton of.

I guess I’ll give that a shot then and ask for a quote with financing. I was always under the impression you can get a better deal during winter and paying cash. Must not be the case anymore.
Yeah the prices are nuts I really don’t understand it. And they are real assholes about haggling too. Really souring me on the purchase of new to be honest.

I bought a 2019 after the 2020's came out and had a deposit on a 2018. The 2018 was under 12K and they matched the price on a 2019 at the dealer I ended up buying from. I'm in Massachusetts. I've bought 4 bikes in the last 5 years and there are dealers that will let a bike rot in the showroom and than there are dealers that are looking to roll bikes and wheel and deal.

I'm in Swansea. What dealer did you buy your bike from? Bought it from Parkway Cycles in Everett. My local dealer is Motorsports International in Auburn but they didn't have any. They had one leftover 2018 when I was looking this summer but were only offering $600 off sticker and it was the blue which I didn't want. Picked up this 2019 Raven for $1k off sticker. Newer bike for less money in a color I wanted = worth the drive to get it lol

They own 3 stores and they will work hard to give the best price if they have to. It's about an hour away from me with no traffic. I had a deposit on a 2018 at Motorsports Nation In Rehoboth which is 15 minutes from me and I had bought a 2016 XSR 900 from. I had a loan on the FJ 09 I was trading in and when I submitted the application they wouldn't finance my requested amount as they thought I was buying a 2nd bike. I went to Motorsports Nation and asked if he could get me financed and he thought he had me by the balls and gave me a crazy high rate. I was pissed off. I got my bank straightened out and they gave me the amount I asked for and then I went shopping and Parkway matched the 2018 price on a 2019 so I bought it. I also put in an application with them and they shaved another 1 1/2% of my banks rate so I financed with them also. Then, I went back to Motorsports Nation and got my deposit back. I told him I bought another bike and he asked me why. I told him he didn't quite have me by the balls as he thought he did. He looked like someone that just stepped in dog shit.

Yea I found one online for that price at a dealer in Concord NH. Called Parkway as they had the same bike in stock to see if they'd price match and they did. Only an hour drive as opposed to over 2 lol. Finance guy was super nice, no bullshit. He ended up signing me up for a credit union just so I'd get a great rate even though I told him it'd be paid off by spring lol. Sucked having to drive out there twice though - once for the paperwork and then again to pick the bike up. It was a torrential thunderstorm that day too so I rented a u-haul trailer and brought it home that way.

I bought my 2017 in January of 2019 for $9,995 out the door. Those dealers you have around there are insane. I didn't even pay cash either. I financed it though a local credit union. I put $2k down for four years at like 3% and my credit is good not great.

There were only 10 new bikes within 250 miles of me back in August when I got mine. Brand new 2019 for $1k off sticker. Everyone else was only doing the $600 off that Yamaha was giving them for the leftovers and MSRP on the 2020's

I put $2k down for four years at like 3% and my credit is good not great. It was 2 years old when you bought it. The dealers finance their inventory and eventually they have to buy the bike outright. Unless they are flush with cash, it makes more sense to blow it out then to have to tie up 12 K in 2 year old inventory. There's not a lot of profit in a motorcycle. Probably well under $1000. Sometimes you catch them at the perfect time. Paying cash is absolutely no incentive to a dealer. They'd rather finance because they pay a base rate to the lender and keep whatever that get above that rate. So if you got 3% they probably paid the bank between 2.5 and 3%.
The only concern with buying 2 - 3 year old inventory is that insurance company will fight to the death to pay you for the age of the bike. I bought a 2016 in 18 and totaled it 6 weeks later. They offer me 4K less than I paid. It took me 2 months of fighting and screaming to finally get what I paid less $200.

Most of the time they dont' even buy them outright. All the dealers I've worked for pay the MFR to have units on the floor called a floor plan. They basically rent the units. They pay to have them on the floor so it's in their best interest to sell them FAST. Once Arctic Cat dealer I worked at paid $88 per month for every ATV and snowmobile on the floor. NONE of that went to paying for the unit. We'd make anywhere from $600-$1000 per unit depending on the model. If you have a year old unit on the floor you're already losing money on it because when you sell it you still need to pay what your cost is on that unit. Everything you've paid in floor plan is money down the drain. Add to that the MFR's requiring you to order so many units every year and it just compounds the problem. If a dealer can pay cash for their units then they're very fortunate because then they don't have to pay floor plan rent to companies like Sheffield that finance the units.
