I got my 2017 FZ10 back in January of 2020 for less than $10k new from my local dealer. with with the money I put down I'm in a good place financially on the bike. I'm seriously considering getting an MT09 SP to replace the FZ10 though. The up market suspension, the triple engine, all the updated tech and all for the price Yamaha set seems like a hell of a deal.
I like my FZ10 don't get me wrong. It just isn't as fun as I though it would be. Also I don't feel that, idk spark like I have with other bikes I've owned like my 1998 VFR or 2002 Blackbird.
I've gone the modification/make it mine route with a tune, Yosh 3/4 exhaust, Puig screen etc etc but I just can't seem to get that fizz ya know? Soooo anyway I'm thinking about the MT09 SP like I said or some other possibilities. What do you guys think? There's no wrong answers or ideas. Busa, ZX14, 1250 Bandit on the short list. I'd love that Kawi H2 SX naked but I'm not dropping that kind of money. So give me some thoughts

Maybe I'm wrong, but if you're not as satisfied with the 10, why would the 9 satisfy you?

Maybe I'm wrong, but if you're not as satisfied with the 10, why would the 9 satisfy you? Well for starters the MT-09 SP has all the electronic goodies from the R1 - the color screen, up/down quick shift, 6-axis IMU, etc. that Yamaha neglected to give to the 10 (except for the SP version which the US doesn't get). It's lighter and cheaper and I know a ton of people who love their 09's. I personally didn't like the vibrations in the bars - too buzzy for me. I was expecting a Triumph-style buttery smooth triple but no - Yamaha had to give the 09 the cross plane treatment too so the firing order isn't smooth at all. What I would do is try to find someone with an 09 and take it for a spin. Obviously you won't find an SP but it'll give you an idea at least.

Maybe I'm wrong, but if you're not as satisfied with the 10, why would the 9 satisfy you? The MT09 seems like a more useable for the street kind of bike. I had an SV650S just before my FZ10. The SV wasn’t powerful enough for me, I’m a big guy (6’3” 220) and I’m also an experienced rider, 22 years riding all kinds of sporty bikes. So I can handle the FZ10 it’s just kinda meh for me and I can’t quite put my finger on it.

I'm similar - 6'1", 250lbs and I love this thing (minus the seat and twitchy throttle but my seat kit is already on the way and I'm sending my ECU in this week for a flash). I love the torque, I love the sound and being older (almost 37) I love the upright seating position - my wrists and lower back thank me. I rode the 09 (and 07) before I rode (then bought) the 10 and the 09 just didn't do it for me. It was fun for sure but the buzzy handlebars was the major turn off. The switchgear also felt pretty cheap compared to the 10 (but better than the 07). The 10 just gave me the ear to ear grin the whole time I was on it.

If the 10 doesn't do it for you then just switch bikes. Happens all the time, you either click with a bike or not, just like with people.

If the 10 isnt speaking to you get rid of it.
I think the question to ask is "What do I want from a bike"? Once you answer that question then you know what to look for.

I was just curious, I get it if the 10 doesn't do it. I guess you can go to a dealer and take the 09 for a spin? Or possibly a Superduke 1290?

I doubt they're doing test rides on those kinds of bikes. Hell I asked the owner of a local dealership who I've known for years if I could test ride a used GSX-S750 they had when I was cross-shopping it with the MT bikes and he said no because insurance won't let them. The only way I got to ride the three MT bikes was when they had Yamaha come with the truck for a demo day.

My local shop had a mt09 at one point, and they said its just a credit check and they let you ride.

So I can handle the FZ10 it’s just kinda meh for me and I can’t quite put my finger on it. Seriously.....I've owned an XSR900 and an FJ 09 and also spent substantial time on a rented FZ09. All are way cool bikes but every one is mediocre with stock suspension. Do the suspension and they really come alive. I have 2019 MT 10 now and while it has a way better suspension than an 09, still mediocre. The 10 out motors the 09 by a long shot, the chassis is directly from an R1 and it out handles the 09 and do an aftermarket rear shock and respring the front forks for your weight (i'm 6'1" 250 lbs) and the 10 becomes a weapon. I think the front forks are workable if you spring them for your weight. Per K-tech and my own experience, the 10 is a much more rigid chassis and is a lot less forgiving in setting up but once you do, you've got a bike that approaches the top of the line liter bikes. I found the 10 kind of battered me around until I got the suspension sorted out. Now it'll outrun and out turn any 09 on the planet. I love the triples but I love my 10 more. I've bought a new bike every winter since 2016 and this week is my 1 year anniversary on the 10. I'm keeping this one, it's too much fun. Maybe it's too much motorcycle for you. That happens.
Watch these videos and tell us if your having that kind of fun.

It's no where near too much bike for me. I've been riding sport bikes since the late 90's way before traction control ABS or throttle maps. I owned a CBR1100XX for years and have ridden 954s 929s CBR600F3 F4 and F4i VFRs HawkGT SV1000S SV650S etc etc. My issue is the lack of that visceral feeling or connection I got from all of those. Maybe it's not the FZ10's fault maybe I just miss the raw and direct analog feeling of the old school bikes. Where you really needed to know what you were doing or you'd get yourself into serious trouble quick.

I know what you mean. The MT is the only bike of yours with ride by wire throttle though, the rest were cable to carb or throttle body. I loved the SV1000S, especially in that copper color. I owner TL1000R's that I absolutely loved. Wish those would come back.

I used K-tech rear shock and front springs. I did 10s and they were too harsh and so I redid with 9.5 and it was perfect. Set the sag, work on rebound and compression until I had it dialed in and it's excellent. K-Tech recommended the heavier spring. My local guy who is a K-tech dealer told me that he thought it was too heavy and he was right. The 10s are more of a track set up which as he pointed out, does not really make for a street set up. He was right. Fortunately doing a front spring is a lot easier then I expected. I also resprung the K-Tech rear shock which was amazingly easy. I'll post a few pictures later when I'm on my personal PC.

The reason I specifically mentioned the MT09 SP is because of the upgraded suspension. It has the Ollins rear shock and higher spec KYB forks. All for right around $10K

All for right around $10K Again, I love the 3 cylinder Yamahas but the MT 10 is basically a detuned naked R1. It's just a better bike. Do the suspension and in my opinion the MT 09 SP still won't touch the 10. Good luck.

The other thing to consider is that most any aftermarket shocks will be $1200 - $1300. Cartridges around $1100. Just front springs for your weight are about $125. So forks and cartridges done by a shop will be around 3K. A little less than $2500 if you do it, including fork tools you need to have or buy (less then $100). If you do a rear shock and fork springs yourself including tools, you're at $1500. Any of these options are going to give you a bike that out handles any Yamaha 3 cylinder plus the MT10 motor will run away from any 09. I've owned them all and although I'm not anything near an expert or a pro rider, I do have experience.
When all is said and done, you're going to probably loose $3000 - $4000 trading in, if not more, maybe a lot more. The MT 10 is not a great selling motorcycle in spite of being an excellent motorcycle.
