I just learned the hard way that 137 ft lbs on the rear axle nut is way too much. Instead of the bolt loosening, the chain puller gave and now the axle spins freely. Any ideas on how to remove the axel?

That happened to me with lightech chain adjusters and the only way I was able to get it off was by using an angle grinder to remove the axle nut. You may also be able to stick a screw driver in the gap and see if it holds, otherwise you know what I had to resort to.
I got a used R1 axle w/ nut on ebay for 46$. I contacted the manufacturer and got a replacement but also agreed that the 137 ft-lbs for the rear axle is ridiculous. 87 ft-lbs is plenty.

I'm going to try to tackle with a dremel and lots of cut off wheels. If that doesn't work ill try the angle grinder.

Wow, crazy. I wonder how often this happens. Always felt like 137 lbs was too crazy.
I think I do 93 lbs which matches my Track Bike. No problems.
Good luck!

Unless you want to order one yourself. My bike is totalled, so Im getting rid of all my leftover parts/mods soon

Hi,
You can possibly weld a piece of steel (as a lever) tot the right side of the axle which gives you the possibility to loosen the nut. Loosen the battery cables before welding!
Regards, Marcel.

Hi guys, I was loosening the axle nut to adjust the chain and it just got stuck to the point that the axle started to spin and messed up the axle block on the chain side. So upsetting!!! I think that the threads on the axle are ruined by the torque applied to it. Might it be that 140 ft-lb on the owners manual be to much?

Moderator Note: Threads combined. New Post was posted in the wrong forum. As it is the Same issue within a month, decided just to combine threads.

It seems so. You're not the only one who has had this issue. I think I torque mine to 93 lbs which matches what my track bike calls for.
I would replace the axle if you think it's damaged. At the very least, take it to a mechanic who has a tap and die set and have them recut the threads. But usually an axle is an easy item to find used on Ebay. I think 2015+ R1 axles may work.

Coming up on 200 miles on my new bike and the chain is loose AF. Glad I saw this before I cranked the nut down tight.

I already placed an order for an axle and nut. I have a set of Lightech chain adjusters which I was planning on installing (even though until now have been hesitant based on a much lower torque value they require), but now I am convinced that what Lightech requires is correct.

I just did mine today - first chain tightening. Axle nut didn't seem to be anywhere near 140ft-lb when I loosened it but I torqued it to 93 so I should be good from here on out.
