not surprised to see this thread pop back up. Just read on the Super Tenere' site the same conversation and it seems to be a not so uncommon move to go to the manual CCT. I am seriously thinking this is the way I am going to go. Anyone do this on their FZ yet? Care to share experience? Haven't done it to this bike yet, but I can attest, having done so to several previous bikes, that it is worth doing to avoid further cct issues on any bike.

Just my 2cents. Mine got a bit hot when I got a hole in the radiator, I should have had guards fitted, ( but that's another story.) Anyway, ever since it has seemed that the ticking was more noticeable and louder, whereas it hadn't really bothered me in the past. So, today I changed the oil and there is a noticeable improvement. The old oil that came out had done 2000kms since first dealer service and had got pretty hot so I'm thinking the oil had degraded somewhat faster than normal. I guess they should have put full sinthectic in, but it was a dealer so who knows... I'll see how it goes but I think there will be some experimentation with oils to see which copes best with hot running. The bike stays at around 80C in normal running but as you all know gets hot quick in slower traffic, riding with the fan on almost all the time.

Every time, the engine becomes quiet as a mouse;then I ride happily and the moment I get stuck in traffic or at a light and the bike heats up the tick comes right back very prominently. The thinned oil when running hot must be causing the cct not to operate properly. Might as well just swap to a manual tensioner; I personally cannot stand the tick.. just wish the only manual tensioner on the market wasn't $150... Where are you at APE???

Good news, I just emailed APE, their tensioner listed for the r1 (2009-2015) is in fact compatible on the latest model through 2017, therefore it is usable on our bikes! $80 is much better than $150...
Part #: YTR1-09-PRO

Way higher quality for a few more bucks I have used several APE tensioners over the years, they are very high quality with the exact same function for about half the price. I'll save a few dollars for other parts

Interested to resolve this problem for myself....can you confirm that the manual tensioner did indeed resolve the problem?

Thanks.... Are there no other auto tensioners on the market that work better than the default one? Or is the noise/ticking symptomatic of automatic tensioners in general and therefore the only solution ..... a manual tensioner.
I' like to just pay a reputable mechanic to replace the part and be done with it. I lack the skills required to do it myself as well as ongoing adjustments for the manual tensioner solution.

Interested to resolve this problem for myself....can you confirm that the manual tensioner did indeed resolve the problem? I've been extremely busy for a few weeks so the tensioner is sitting on the counter. I'll be installing this weekend hopefully, I'll follow up with y'all on how she sounds afterward. If I don't respond this weekend, quote me so I get a notification about this thread. I forget which threads I am actively engaged in often.

The Ape quality isn't even close to that of the Graves tensioner. I would definitely recommend the Graves. I have it on my R1. Strange that my fz10 has 3k on it and no tick.

That's the first time I've read a post where someone familiar with R1 ticking hasn't eventually experienced it on the MT10. It suggests then that fixing the noise the bike makes with an auto tensioner is actually achievable? If that's actually where the problem is in the first place... My previous understanding from other web forums was the issue stems from the design of the engine, surrounding things like clearance space with the finger type tech and tappet sounds emanating as a result?

The design and quality of APE parts is well above par for me, never had the slightest concern or issue with them over the years. To each their own. Also, I didn't have time to install the tensioner this past weekend, hopefully this weekend will be clear..

Installed the tensioner, valves are quiet and the only tick now is the typical yammy cylinder clack. Installed and adjusted in less than a few minutes..
I'll sleep better without that crappy oem tensioner.

I'm ok with a little tick, nit happy about the rattle im hearing at 5000 rpms and over and when decelerating. if the manual tensioner sorts out the propeller sounds/rattle then I'd definitely do it. does it? any chance you can do a video for noobs on how to swap out oem for manual one...?

I'll sleep better without that crappy oem tensioner. Good to know and thanks for the update. I have confirmed with my dealer and found a link (from over a year ago) the link for the recall info from FJ-09 boards. Yamaha knows there are issues with these tensioners and I suggest everyone with a noisy tensioner complain to their dealer and get Yamaha to hear it in #'s. fj-09.org/thread/3832/bulletin-m2016-chain-tensioner-noise-Tom

Yes, the valve clatter is no longer. I did 450 miles yesterday and never heard the valves. I knew it would be fixed by replacing the tensioner, I have been through the same process with several other bikes (mostly Yamahas...) As for instructions, it is very simple, and APE has 4 or 5 detailed videos on their site for install, if you still have questions beyond those, I'd be happy to help you out

It would be nice if the majority of these Japanese bikes would be built with a decent tensioner to start with though
