So i’ve recently bought myself a 2017 MT-10 (import from the UK) and the bike rides amazing. However, during my trip to germany last week with my friend who rides a 2016 MT-10 I noticed the following:
- top speed of his bike is about 15-20 kph higher (could be due to larger windscreen and being more aerodynamic -His bike accelerates faster. We did some roll on drag races in 3rd gear. His bike pulls away from mine like I ride an MT-09 (I’ve had one before I got my MT-10 so I know what the difference looks like) - the strangest of them all: my bike doesn’t do any power wheelies in 2nd and 3rd gear. We swapped bikes and his was so easy to get the wheel up in 2nd at about 7k RPM. But mine struggles to even do a little hop when you full on yank the throttle open at high RPM.
As far as we know he does not have an ECU flash on his bike so they should be riding almost the same (it would expain the pulling away and higher topspeed if he did)
What is strangest to me is the lack of power wheelies. People on youtube easily pull them in 2nd and even 3rd gear.
Does anyone recognise this problem? Does anyone from the UK know if the UK spec bikes maybe come with a different map that reduces power?
Only mod I have on my bike is the Akrapovic slip-on exhaust.
Regards, DutchMT10

Is there a weight difference between the two of you? 20-30lbs would make a big difference on identical bikes.

We're you running the bikes in the same modes/TCS etc?

If anything im about 10kg lighter then him. We did ran in the same power and TC modes. I feel like on the MT-10 there is hardly any difference between the power modes anyway

I would bet the difference is that the ECU was flashed. This would easily explain the difference in power, given that you rode both bikes and there was that much noticeable power with all other variables being basically the same.

That would makes sense. But do you recon all the guys doing the power wheelies on video all have their bikes flashed? You’d expect a 1000cc bike with relative short gearing to pop power wheelies with ease in 2nd gear.

How about elevation? Thinner air? Air filter dirty?
These bikes respond very well to ECU flashes and are pretty common. The difference in power is what I would expect out of an ECU flash. Unless, like you hinted, the UK bikes are more restricted than other Euro bikes.

Something definitely wrong! My 2018 with yoshi 3/4 Alfa T exhaust and 2wdw flash and ftecu active tune will power wheelie @ 95mph in 4th gear! I’m 155lbs and at sea level!

I am actually having the same issue, I just bought mine used and installed block off plate, Delkevic 8" de-cat and 2WDW tune and it struggles to do wheelies at all even in second when I'm yanking the throttle, sitting at the back of my seat and bouncing the front it takes ALOT of effort compared to people much heavier just rolling on the throttle and lifting the front. Was it the same before mods and 2wdw flash?

OP, how many miles are on your bike? Depending on miles it may be good to check valve clearances and condition of spark plugs if you didn't do it right when you got the bike.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
Elevation was about a couple of hundred meters at the most when I checked it in germany. However I also have the problem at home and we are about 6 meters below sea level here in Rotterdam.
As for valve clearance and spark plugs, I havent checked that. In went to the dealer last week to let them listen to the ticking noise that comes from the engine. Turns out that it is pretty normal for an MT-10 as the engine walls are very thin and you can hear the cam chain tensioner and the injectors as a result.
I bought the bike with 11300km and it now has 13kkm ish on the clock.

Also for the people that want some footage. I have 2 videos on my YT channel from the germany trip. From both the Nurburgring GP track and the nordschleife where you can see that the bike doesn't come up at all in 2nd gear under full acceleration. Not trying to Advertise (I don’t do much with youtube anyway) but here is the link: www.youtube.com/c/DutchMT10

Since you mentioned the ticking let me ask you this. Which side of the engine is your ticking coming from. I have an intermittent tick but it is on the left side of the engine (while sitting on the bike) and the cam chain is on the right side. It’ll tick when I first start the bike then I’ll go to a gas station about 3 miles away, turn the bike off to get fuel and when I restart the bike it’ll be gone most of the time. Not every time though.

When sitting on the bike the sound seems to come from the left side. However when standing next to it it is almost impossible to hear which side it comes from. Sound gets louder and quieter depending on time ridden and temperature etc. As mentioned the dealer said it was fine. He even said that my bike was actually pretty quiet compared to other ones he had delivered. He told me the engine walls are just really thing and that makes it so you mainly hear the injectors moving. What you supposedly hear is the plunger moving up and down. It makes sense that it changes loudness as the bike changes temperature because of the expanding materials. In the end MT-10s are known to make a lot of engine noise, so as long as there are no strange vibrations of big power losses going on there is no reason for panic.
Mine does vary depending on engine RPM btw

That would makes sense. But do you recon all the guys doing the power wheelies on video all have their bikes flashed? You’d expect a 1000cc bike with relative short gearing to pop power wheelies with ease in 2nd gear. I'm no wheelie king...in fact I rather suck at them. But even when it was stock my 2018 MT would easily loft the front end.

Id say you guarantee youre caught on on basic maintenance before you dig too deep or assume its a larger issue than iy might really be.
My bike is tuned w/ decat but still power wheelies at 6k' elevation. I usually WOT in 2nd gear at around 45.

**********UPDATE********** Okay guys I’ve got some interesting news. I put the bike on the dyno and the results were interesting. Luckily I’m not going crazy. The bike put out 132whp which is about 20 whp below what it should do when stock. Yamaha claims 160 and according to the tuner pretty much all stock MT10s make about 152-153whp. So obviously there is something wrong with mine. The interesting thing is that my bike hit 264 km/h on the dyno which means that is has been derestricted with an ECU flash before but somehow doesn’t make the power.
I bought the bike only 3 months ago and the tuner and dealer are located next to each other so they are going to figure out together what is wrong with the bike under warranty.
According to the tuner it is probably one of the following problems: -Bike has been postal flashed and has a bad flash that limits the HP -Bike has been flashed for a different exhaust system and was sold with the stock system without undoing its custom flash. -The EXUP valve in the exhaust might not be (fully) working resulting in a loss of power.
Whatever the problem is they are going to find it out and fix it which is nice. Bike will be dropped off at the dealer in 2 weeks and in will most an update whenever I have one.
Thanks for the help so far!

The flash is increasing CO wich is killing cat quickly if not removed. Losing power is the proof of a cat dying/colmating.

Great to hear that a problem has been found (sounds bad, but i think its good to find problems, that way they dont escalate) and even better that youe got the sealer and a tuner working together to find the cause of the problem. Hope all goes well 👍

*****UPDATE***** Soooo, the final update. Bike is back from the dealer. Like mentioned before the exup valve was the problem. For some reason the pull cables that attach to the servo motor were reversed. So it never opened during accelerations. So how does it feel? HOLY SHIT WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Like expected the bike now pulls wheelies in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear with ease. They also put the bike on the dyno again and it pulled 162 WHP which is quite a lot higher than expected. Thanks to everything for the suggestions and I hope this thread will help other people that have power issues.
Cheers! Joris
