Hello everyone, I’m hoping to get some insight about an issue I’m having with my 2017 FZ10. My bike has sat for about 5 months without being started. I checked the battery a few weeks ago and it was at 2vdc. No sense in charging it, so I bought a new one. I had the new battery on a trickle charger For about a week, installed it today @ 14vdc, the bike wouldn’t start. All the lights and gauges turn on and the fuel pump cycles. When I hit the ignition the starter relay buzzes, the engine doesn’t turn over, the gauges turn off. When I release the ignition everything cycles back on; gauges, lights, fuel pump. After about 10 tries the engine sounded like it was ABOUT to turn over, but didn’t, and the battery started smoking. I checked the battery and it was drained down to 9vdc. Has this happened to anybody else? I pulled the tank off to check the air box and filter to make sure no critters got in there, but it was all clean. I figured while I had the tank off I might as well drain the old gas and replace it. That’s where I left off for today. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

The starter motor sounds to me like it could be locked up. If you can get the engine to turn over by trying to bump start it then I'd look closer at the starter motor being locked up.
This will sound silly, but charge the battery and get a ratchet extension and hit the starter motor using the extension and a hammer while pressing the starter button. This trick has worked on some old scooters I've worked on with stuck starters. A 2017 bike shouldn't have a stuck starter already, but it's an easy thing to try.

Reminded me of my first car, ‘81 VW Rabbit. Starter solenoid was going bad. Would just make a clicking sound when trying to start it. Had to tap it a few times and then it would start. Was a pain, but got me through till I got it replaced. Would pop the hood tap it then go back and try to start it. Worked better when someone else tapped while you turned the key, but still could eventually start doing it by yourself.

Yea, check to see if the motor is spinning freely as in, you can remove the left engine case cover cap and spin the crankshaft to make sure nothing is binding internally.
Battery smoking sounds like it’s getting a really bad draw somewhere, there maybe a short in your starter itself. Not entirely sure man that sucks brother good luck for sure!

I’ve done this on a few atv’s I’ve wrenched on. If the problem persists today I’ll definitely give it a shot.

Yea, I’m thinking it was a bad battery. For all my bikes I’ve always used OEM, this is the first one that hasn’t been oem. I put in a Bike master true gel. Specs show cold cranking amps at 145, maybe to weak for a sedentary start? I didn’t measure The actual amp draw while cranking, just vdc. I just checked the voltage After letting the battery sit over night.... 11.2vdc. It was at 12.7 when I took it off the charger to let it sit overnight.

I did this today and it was all good. Then after replacing the gas in the tank and reconnecting the battery I popped it in second and without pulling the clutch in rocked the bike backwards to listen to the starter motor. I could hear it. After 3 cranks she fired right up! My babies alive again!
