Hello All, hope someone can give me some kind of advice. I recently replaced my chain and sprockets on my bike (post of install will soon come). I rolled it down the drive way, started it up, shifted into first gear and it died. I thought, huh weird. Fired it back up in neutral, shifted it into first again. The second I hit the shifter down it dies. Now before you ask, YES, kick stand was up. So here is the situation:
- starts in neutral only - Will not start in gear with the clutch pulled in - with the bike running, I pull in the clutch and shift into first it immediately dies, same thing with second gear - When bike is off and in gear, the bike will roll as normal with the clutch pulled in
Things I did to hopefully fix it:
- Let it warm up for a while before shifting, not luck - Tried giving it a bit of throttle when I shifted, again no luck - Cleaned the phuc out of the sidestand switch (wd-40 and soft brissle brush) - Double checked chain tightness - Double checked clutch cable slack - Rolled the bike around with it turned off, in gear and in neutral to hopefully loosen up the clutch? (I heard that was a thing once, not sure beyond that)
When I took off my sprockets, chain, and tire is it possible I broke something? Literally have no other ideas, hoping someone has an idea!

Has to be the kickstand sensor. I know you said you cleaned it but Try missing with it's alignment. If not, the sensor could be bad.

Another question, when you pack those wires back in under that cover by the front sprocket is there a way I could have shorted them somehow by packing them in incorrectly?

Another question, when you pack those wires back in under that cover by the front sprocket is there a way I could have shorted them somehow by packing them in incorrectly? It's of course a possibility but usually that would only happen if the wires were exposed and touching the bike. So you could probably check the length of the cable and make sure there no damage. I'm not familiar with the design of the kickstand on our bike so please take my advice not as an expert but if it were me, I would take the kickstand fully apart and do a thorough cleaning and put it back together as per the service manual. My experience with prior bikes is usually the mechanical sensor falls out of alignment. ALSO follow the wire up a bit and make sure you didn't unplug it farther up the wire. I think there's another connection which you can access from that side of the bike without going under the tank. Make sure it's not unplugged there. If that didn't correct it, I would try to narrow down where the problem is. I would take the plug out of the kickstand and you can "bridge" the metal contacts with a piece of foil. That would complete the circuit and if the bike then works, it's the mechanical part of the kickstand switch that's faulty and I would replace . If that doesn't, then I would move up the wire to the next plug or relay and try to bridge the wire there. If it then works, replace that wire or relay. And double check the clutch and brake switches. I really think it's the kickstand switch but doesn't hurt to check.

Update for everyone, I have been messing with the sidestand switch all day; wiggling it around and no luck. I took the cover off the front sprocket and look at the wire for any damage. There is a connector for the sidestand switch to plug into another wire above the front sprocket housing in a rubber boot. I disconnect the two and hit both side with canned air, and still luck. Thinking of opening the tank. Some people have told me about the service bulletin for the sidestand switch. It seems to me in the service bulletin that they just download something on the ECU, but has any one done this? Is it just to service the ecu or the side stand switch?

Looks like you're right. Says it is caused by turning the key too slowly. Only problem with the fix is it will wipe any flash if you've had your ECU flashed. If you're under warranty, dealer should do it for free.
SUBJECT: ***Recall Notice (Soft) - Side Stand Switch Fault Code
Type: Soft Recall: Side Stand Switch Fault Code - P1601 Bulletin: #M2016-006 Description: Kick stand switch fault code thrown when ignition is slowly turned on. It's usually indicated by the ABS staying lit for a 5-15 seconds after start. I was able to get the tech bulletin please see images below:

That issue was for early 2017s only; the TSB should have the VIN range. My xxx001598 VIN wasn't affected, if it helps.
Hey OP, if you got to the side stand switch connector, you could temporarily jump the 2 terminals, and see if the engine starts. It should if it's the switch. Good luck.

From the factory service manual. Not sure, but it might help.

Happened to me twice. Page 9-13 of service manual. With a scan tool erase Fault Code P1601. Page 3-4 for scan tool help. Easy if you have a scan tool with adapter.
Ride on.

The original side stand switch issue affected only early FZ-10's, and it would only throw a code, it wouldn't prevent the bike from operating. That's not your issue. The issue is the sidestand switch or its wiring. I've never found much adjustability on these types of switches (sidestand, throttle, brake), they are always in alignment. Maybe the switch itself is bad and needs replacing.
Its been a week since you last reported so hopefully you have it sorted out by now.
