my apology for such a remedial question but why are there two threaded holes at the rear of the swingarm? are they both for spools? is one location better than the other?

My presumption is just the flexibility. I think when the front tire is on the ground, the front one is more stable. When storing or utilizing front stands, I think the rear is more stable.
I could be wrong. You also have added flexibility of putting a frame slider on one and a spool on the other. There are also some that I saw that use both holes that will allow the spool to be lower or farther back.

I’ve had my spools set in the rear hole for 15k miles, so several tire changes and chain adjustments have been fine. It did become a problem later in my chain’s life as the brackets on my rear stand were in the way of the 32mm socket needed for the rear axle. I have since moved them forward to avoid this conflict.

The front ones (as in closer to the front wheel) lift the bike less, so they require less leverage to put bike on the stand. And if you use longer spools and slider combinations (like I do), they stick out too much at the rear, so I left them in the front location. I think the rear location is for quick rear tire changes on the track, but you have the option to use either location. Your choice .
