Is the Yamaha special tool for swingarm nut removal really necessary or are there easier ways to get the nut loose?

There's no 'special' tool needed to remove the swingarm nut, other than having a 1/2" 32mm socket, and a large enough bar to break it loose easily (I use a Gorilla wrench). By the way, the factory torque is 137 ft/lbs, but I used 100. Hope this helps.

Yes, I'm asking re the pivot arm bolt(aka swingarm bolt). As I'm changing out the shock & rear brake disc & pads I've decided to take the swingarm off to ease shock install. In my experience with both previous generations of the FZ, Yamaha doesn't lube the axles, pivot bolt hardly at all.

If you mean "special tool" for the castle nut, then just buy a normal socket large enough and use a dremel to cut it into the right shape. Will take time, but it will get the nut off without damage and without costing the earth. Will also allow you to toque it back up properly with a torque wrench.

Was advised that Motion Pro makes a socket tool for this purpose so that's the way I'm going.
