So with this bike being new to me and the last owner running her pretty hard without care for a true break in....are the fz10 rear brakes just crap or is it mine? These are the weakest brakes of any street bike i have owned. It is possible they are glazed, in fact i bet the rear are glazed but DANG they are just horrible. I mash it to the road and barely slow down. I feel the ABS doing its job but the ability to stop is just not there lol, even the fronts are kinda weak. I was excited when i saw the brembo rear master but why pair it with nissin? Anyway I think a set of rotors and pads are going to be my next purchase as I said it is a good bet the rear is glazed but I need to eliminate that possibility and go from there. Please let me know what your opinions are.

I’m not sure if the rear brake is weak relative to other bikes since I rarely use the rear brake. When I push down hard on my rear brake, i can get the ABS to kick in.
The front brakes suck. I did a pad swap to the Vesrah RJL pads. They’re a bit better, but I preferred the feel of the EBC HH pads on my FZ-09. They felt like they would bite harder with less lever effort than the vesrah. But I am comparing FZ-09 vs MT-10.

I wish this bike wasnt so rare. When my drz had a funky issue there were 5 others to test and compare. From my readings it looks like yamaha skimped on the brakes. Better pads are a must it seems. Idk the brakes just dont inspire confidence, even for street use. My versys 1k had killer brakes compared to it.

I would replace the pads first. Use a medium-grit abrasive pad on the rear rotor, not to try and resurface it, but to remove any residual material from the previous pads. You mentioned that you bought the bike used. How old is that brake fluid? Flush it and replace with good stuff (I prefer Motul RBF 600). Another often overlooked step is adjustment of your brake pedal. Be sure that your foot is getting good leverage. These steps alone should improve power and feel.
PS: If you want to see a bike with crappy rear brakes, hop on a late-model (2012-on) Ducati Multistrada. That thing might as well have had NO brake on the rear wheel whatsoever. The fronts weren't all that either until the company finally wised up and installed Brembo M50 calipers as stock beginning in 2015.
PPS: On far end of the scale you could do what I did, rip out all those extraneous hard lines and bypass the ABS pump with direct custom-made Core Moto lines.

With a 55" wheelbase, you don't need much rear brakes . I haven't used mine at all so far. I also don't find the stock front brakes objectionable at all for the streets, but apparently I'm in the minority here. You guys must ride like freaking hooligans then. Ha ha.

I was able to easily trigger the ABS with stock rear brakes. It was probably a waste of money for me to upgrade to stainless lines and Vesrah RJL brake pads back there. The front brakes... an entirely different story.

The stock pads on the bike are less than desirable. With that being said, I don't think it's worth it to bother upgrading the rear. It's actually good to not have as much braking force back there, which will prevent you from locking up the rear or at least kicking ABS in everytime you use the rear brake.
The front definitely needs upgrades though. I did pads (SBS pads), The R1 master cylinder, and stainless steel brake lines and have seen an incredible leap forward in braking performance.
