I know, I know, Why doesn't the admin of the FZ-10 forum actually own an FZ-10 yet? Answer? I'm a sales Manager. Therefore, I'm a cheap skate and a sales rep's worst nightmare.
MSRP for the Yamaha FZ-10 is $12,999. Plus doc fee, set up fee, shipping fees, and it's all a bunch of bullshet.
Today I told em that I'd buy it today if they eliminate Doc fee, Set up fee, Shipping fee and all those other bs fee that they jack on to bikes during riding season.
This will change in January, when it's 20 degrees F out and they haven't sold a bike in weeks. I'll buy one for $12,500 and not a penny more. And it better have a full tank of fuel.
This is how I buy new bikes. Always wait until their slowest time of the year. In Arizona, that might be in mid July when it's actually too hot for most to ride?
In northern states, it's in the middle of a snow blizzard when all of the reps are broke with no sales coming in. I bought my FZ-09 during a blizzard. Roads were clear and the dealer's reps were surprised to see me walk in the door. I got the bike for $600 less than MSRP, with no extra dealer fees jacked on.
Now, financing. Unless the dealer can actually get you 2.9 % or lower, skip their finance dept. Go to your local Credit Union and get pre approved for exactly the amount that you want to pay, and not a penny more. Work out all of the details, grab the business card of the person who approves you and take that to the dealer. Tell them, (during the snow blizzard) that you are pre approved for $xx,xxx exactly and that's the amount you will pay.
Dont let them talk you into any down payment. You already worked those details out with the credit union.
I also do not buy extended warranties. The one year warranty is good enough because if that engine or tranny is gonna blow prematurely, it will happen during the breakin period. Unless it's a BMW, those damn tranny's grenade alot.
I dont let dealer techs work on my bikes. Here is why. Dealers dont pay mechanics very much money, so they end up having alot of turnover. They also push their techs to crap our as many repairs as possible and the truth is that dealer mechanics are often not up to par to be touching our bikes. Over worked, under paid and all of the best mechanics start their own repair shops in order to earn what they make.
These good mechanics often charge far less than dealers rip off fees and provide superior work.

Great information post! I really like to negotiate the price of a motorcycle or a car. I would add that you should let them know you're ready to buy for XX$$ OTD price and that you will continue to visit dealership until one wants to sell you for that amount of money. If you get the right price, it shouldn't take too long. They will probably tell you that this is impossible to get the price you want to pay. They will ask you to be reasonable and they'll come with a counter offer. If that's the case, try to walk away. Go visit another dealer or go home after visiting a few. Good chance you'll receive a call in the next few hours or days. If you went to far, you can always get back and make a deal. Don't forget to have fun doing that, don't be a jerk, be polite, but don't try to make friend. Only my humble opinion about buying anything worth negotiating.

I agree with the have fun and be polite advice and that winter may be the best time to purchase. A few days ago (Dec 26), I was able to negotiate down to what I thought was a good OTD price. The sales manager was polite and did not hassle/pressure me in any way. It was still a lot of money, so I told him that I needed to think about it some more. We shook hands and I left. Then after considering it overnight, I went back the next day and accepted the deal. I am now the proud owner of a black FZ-10. Now, I just want the rain and cold weather to be over.

Congratulations zrx! Great color as well. Post up some picks of your new monster and don't forget to smile for the camera.
The downside of getting a good price in the off season is not being able to ride it.

I guess I did good. I did not get it for 12.5, but 13.1 out of the door... In California. I had to wait for the Armour Grey, I was set on this bike. I bought it over the phone during work break. I know the dealer and sales guy. I've got my R1 and Zuma from them. By the way, my R1 has 30K, not a single issue, only thing I've done was spark plugs and changed the coolant in order to do a track day. So far I have installed a top plate, quick shifter and the Akrapovic slip on. Next will be K&N air filter and waiting for another sale on ECU flash. I'm so happy with the FZ, it's more fun than the R1.

Thanks for the info Cruizin, what about the Yamaha Extended Services (Y.E.S) plans, are they worth anything?

Thanks for the info Cruizin, what about the Yamaha Extended Services (Y.E.S) plans, are they worth anything? Just my personal opinion here, but I never buy em. But I don't let dealer techs work on my bikes at all. And most people I know who buy the extended Yamaha warranties never use em. But, if you are the type who lets the dealer do oil changes and maintenance then it might be a good option. Alot of the mods that I do to my bikes void warranties anyways.

Negotiating for any vehicle has to do with how long the dealer/factory is sitting on the cash that is tied up for the inventory on the floor. Dealers have a time in which they have to move a vehicle before they have to pay the factory for that vehicle. There are also factory rebates and discounts based on volume of inventory brought in, model change over, and so on. (back end monies). The best time to buy any vehicle is from a dealer who is not moving a specific model, at a time of the year when they are not selling vehicles quickly. You want to catch the vehicle that is sitting on the floor the longest so as to maximize the incentive for the dealer to move it at or below cost. If the factory is kicking in monies to move the vehicle then you have more room to play with. The other factors are sales persons commission, and extra charges (prep, freight, random dealer BS). Here is a great website that will show you dealer invoices (before back end incentives) for most motorcycles: www.seedealercost.com/products/manufacturer-models/index/id/1432/productCategorySlug/powersports

I went to a few dealerships looking for quotes. One said 12.3k + 4.5% tax and tag, one said 12550 otd, and one said " come back when you want to buy and I'll beat their price." I have one more to visit, but the dealer who gave me a no hassle quote of 12550 is my current front runner.
My question for you all is should I pull the trigger now at 12550 or wait til the 18s are out in December? Full disclosure my last bike was stolen (r6) as was my first bike (sv650s) so I'm hoping the thieves won't target this one if I keep it covered, chained, and disk locked.

Many factors go into pricing, how long the dealer has had the bike, how many he has, are you a past customer, and are you a good negotiator all factor into the equation. Can't say whether the price you have been quoted of $12550 is good or not in Oct 2017 as I bought mine in Nov 2016. If your last ride was stolen make sure you insure it for its value, if it sits outside covering it, chaining it, and disc locking it may not be enough for a dedicated thief. If you have had two bikes stolen you are obviously living in an area and environment that puts you at risk.

If something is out of my ability (whether time, complexity, or lack of specialized equipment) I take it to the guy i learn from, and pay him a quarter what a shop would. Im not a cheapskate, i do a lot of work for him. What do those services even really do other than change oil? They wanted me to pay 2k for 3 years of service. i couldnt believe what they were saying. The guy kept pushing it on me and pushing it on me, showing me that the services add up after x miles/year. I asked what it included, and they said "priority maintenance" ie, your new tires wont take a week and a half to put on, unlimited oil, tire, and chain maintenance (I asked if that included the oil, filter, chain, lube, etc. and the answer was no). The guy was condescending and was visibly getting upset that i refused the extended warranty, the 2k service plan, the lower service plan (no more useful than a damn coupon book) or the wheel and tire coverage. I had already haggled the freight/prep/inspection fees down so that the OTD was around 13, and got them to toss in some spools, and i could tell they were expecting to make some money here.

Maintenance service plans are always a waste of money, imo. Bikes and cars are pretty easy to maintain these days, oil and filter changes are about it now.
I usually don't buy an extended warranty either (Y.E.S. for Yamaha) but as bikes get more and more complicated the answer isn't always clear now, there are lots of electronic aids that can go haywire (ECU's, ABS, TCS). I just bought an official Y.E.S warranty for $469 which extends the factory warranty another 4 years, that's pretty cheap for full protection (no deductible), it comes out to about 32 cents per day. I loose that much change each day. And it can be transferred if you sell the bike so you can recoup some of the cost. Of course if you heavily modify your bike an extended warranty isn't of much value.
I've had a nail in each of my last three tires on my bikes so I bought the tire/wheel package for the FZ-10, two weeks ago I found a nail in the FZ's rear tire at 3,000 miles, it was fully covered and a brand new tire was installed at zero cost to me. So right now it is a break even deal for me as the cost of the tire/wheel warranty was just about the same cost as the new installed tire. And I still have two years left on the tire warranty.
It's all a personal decision, some don't want any of these warranties and that's fine, but I wouldn't automatically assume they are a rip off. Do the math and access the probability. It may make sense.

If I drop the bike I'd rather just fix it myself. and I would rather support a dealer that will give me a competitive no-hassle quote than a higher pressure dealer that will try to rope me in with ambiguous promises, marginally undercut his competition (who were honest enough to provide a decent quote), and then negotiate everything he can out of me. I don't think the difference would be more than a few hundred based on what I've read here, unless they're REALLY trying to move these things to make room for the 18s. Edit: do you guys think thieves are likely to target an FZ-10? I know it's a naked R1, but I am hoping they're drawn by the allure of all the supersports/superbikes in the area and pass mine over. I am in a top 10 market for theft which really pisses me off.

Agree on trying to do business with your local dealer, better to keep your business local if you can.
Many bike thefts are crimes of opportunity, if it is easily stolen they will steal it. The FZ-10 would be a desirable bike so if you are in a high risk area try to take extra caution. Is it going to be housed outside or in a locked garage, that makes a big difference. Fortunately I live in a rural low crime area and it is in a locked garage in front of two cars so it is not likely to be stolen.

I paid $11,600 plus 6% tax, a $50 document fee, no freight no prep, anybody will get the same deal I got, I won't name the dealer because I don't want to be accused of being a salesman for them, but they sell everything below MSRP with no freight or prep, just a $50 fee. If you want a bike and they don't have it, they can usually find one. I'm sure if you shop around you can do a little better than even $12550 OTD if that includes tax and fees, the salesman I dealt with showed me the invoice and it was about $250 below what I paid. I've bought bikes at this dealership since 1984 from 2 different owners, the current owner holds to the original owners sales model and has for 30 yrs. You can wait to see if they changed anything for 18 and see what the price difference will be, if nothing changes, I figure you'll see at least a $200 price increase, but there are quite a few 17 around the country according to CycleTrader searches I did. Some places will post a low price on there and then add freight and prep on top, look for ones that don't and you'll pay close to what I did, unless there is some factory rebates. It sucks that your bikes got stolen, have you checked on insurance, that is always something I do before I purchase any bike, if you live in a high theft area or the bike model had a bad crash history expect to pay higher premiums. I get decent rates, but I'm 57 almost 58 and have 4 bikes insured through my agent and they brokered through progressive.

Ty for the input. It's going to suck to not ride this fall but I am going to wait til they announce the 18s and buy mid-winter. I found another dealer who quoted me at 11800 +4.5% tax and title fee, and I live in a relatively expensive market (DC) so I'll go with them if I get a 17 and they have any in stock.
The fz insurance is the same as my r6 was for liability and theft. I am sure it would be better if I didn't have 2 thefts in 2 years.
