So the time has come around and I'm looking at getting some new tires. I'm pretty much dead set on the Michelin Pilot Road 4's since I mainly commute and ride around town and go up to the mountains about once every two weeks and want too get the most life while still having some good rubber on the side. The predicament I'm in now is that my rear tire is pretty worn while my front still has some pretty good life on it (Definitely not from many hard pulls).
This is only the second set of tires I've replaced, with the others being on my -07, which were both at the same time because they were both pretty worn. I'm leaning towards just having them done at the same time for consistent wear and similar rubber characteristics but was looking to get your guys opinion. Also, thoughts on the Pilot Road 4's? I only was able to ride about 2,000 miles on them on my -07 and they seemed pretty great but not much hard canyon carving was done with them.
Thanks! Mad

Based on the riding that you do, I wouldn't be too concerned with it. If you have life on your front tire, keep it up there. It it's at or near the wear bars (at any section of the tire) then replace it.
The PR4s sound like a good tire for you. You should definitely go with more of a commuter or touring tire. They can cost more than sport tires but they will last much much longer, saving money in the end.

I'm a big fan of Dunlop Road Smart III tires, great mileage and good performance. If the front still has tread keep using it. I'm still using the original Battlax front with the Dunlop rear, no issues. I usually get 2x wear out of the front.

Consistent wear is not happening now, so slim chance it will later on down the line, I say. If it were me, I would change the rear to whatever you want to, and per past experience(reading your thread), by the time the front wears is out the rear wil probably be worn out as well. Then I get a fresh new set.

Just replace my rear S20 with a BS T30 sport touring tire at 6k miles.
Put just over 1000 miles on the T30 and it holds and corners well on the FZ10
The front still has a lot of tread and may last another 3k.
The last time I bought the T30 was for my ole FJR and they were good for about 11k miles and that bike was 630lbs without me on it.
The PR4 is also suppose to be a great tire and should give you some great mileage.

Definitely going to just replace the rear then and I'll have to look at some of the other tires you guys are recommending. I'm at about 4,800 miles so not terrible wear out of the battleax's, and the rear still has some life so that'll be my excuse to ride even more so that I can get my new rear before my trip down to the Dragon!
As always thanks for all the quick info, I appreciate it! Mad

Unless you are going with the same tire as a replacement, I personally would change both the front and rear together even if there is some life left. Manufacturers design the front and rear tires to work together for each specific model of tire so personally I would never mismatch tire models but thats just me.

I'd also recommend changing both at the same time. You should look into a set of the Michelin road 5's that are out now

Performance bikes magazine has just done a road and track tyre test and the S21's came out on top. I'd be tempted on pilot 5's next tho but my rear S21 appears to be wearing much better than the S20
