Last week I plopped a deposit down to have a new 2018 blue shipped to the dealer just for me. But the catch is, I guess with the new dealer system for Yamaha - they don't provide an ETA. And the Yamaha rep wouldn't commit to even an estimate when my dealer talked to him.
So the question is, anybody order a bike through a dealer that couldn't source a bike from another dealer and had to order from yamaha - and if so, how long did it take?
I'm up in MN and there's still snow on the ground and in the forecast, so I'm in no real rush - but when spring finally hits I want to be on my new bike.
Thanks for the info.

I did it once with a Kawasaki, and it took a while. Can't remember exactly, but it was in the couple of month range. They usually add it to a container load, which goes by ship, and sits a Long Beach for a while in customs. I eventually gave up because another dealer got one on the showroom floor from a faster shipment. No one had any idea then who was getting what. The area rep said he didn't know either. I had that bike on the road for 3 or 4 weeks before hearing anything from the first dealer.
That was a few years ago, but I wouldn't expect anything for at least a month, unless they have any unsold units already in transit.

I doubt the bike is going to shipped from Japan, instead it is coming from whatever stock Yamaha USA has in this country, or is already in the supply pipeline. Might be a week or so, or a little longer. I'm surprised it couldn't have been sourced from another dealer, these bikes aren't exactly flying off the shelves.

Yeah, I suspect it is a stateside warehouse but even on that point the Yamaha rep wouldn't clarify. Just kind of odd they couldn't give an estimate. And I think because they're not flying off the shelves is why I couldn't find a 2018 in stock.

My wife is in the same situation, we ordered her an 18 MT09, matte grey with the highliter wheels, yamaha told the dealer to put in the order now, they start shipping in april, should see it 1st of may time zone. My dealer has told me Yamaha is no longer an M/C company they are an ATV company (per Yamaha). and the bikes cant be ordered in the manner they were. He said they went from the best company to order bikes from to the worst in the last 2 years. We had this conversation at christmas when I was trying to acquire a ttr110 for my granddaughter, because he couldnt get one in in time, she got a KLX 110 instead.

Fingers crossed... My dealer made it sound like their old inventory system for bikes was just like parts. He could put in an order and see they had 30 in Cincinnati (for example), and due to repetition be able to predict the day they'd get the bike. Now it sounds like eBay - you place an order and we'll tell you when the status changes. But I think now we've got ourselves a race Superspirit.
I was really surprised at what looks like poor sales on the FZ-10 in my area. The dealer I ended up getting the 2018 from got two 2017s, and still has them both. I know I'm not indicative of the majority of motorcycle buyers, but this is exactly (I hope) the bike I've been looking for.

My 18 Gray/High Viz took about a week and a half. It was delivered via truck from Seattle to my local dealer at the Ohio/WV border.

I just dealt with this. I tried to order a 2018 in blue. The dealership wouldn't give me an eta but finally emailed me letting me know they'd be in stock around mid April. I'd check around at a few different dealerships because I actually found one in stock at another place. It was a little bit of a drive but I have it now for the same price.

Just got a call from the dealer, current estimate is mid-May for delivery which is a pisser. I wonder what would cause the lead time to be out that far. Spring still isn't here yet in MN and I have my R1 but fingers still crossed they're under-promising so they can over-deliver.

Why not shop around and get it from another dealer? Put it on a trailer and drag it home, there are plenty of blue MT-10s sitting on dealer showrooms right now. You may wish that it will come in before mid-May but it well may come in in June, or July, or ..... The riding season in MN isn't all that long, why chance a late delivery?

There are no 2018s anywhere near me, but yeah I wish I could either pick it up or have my dealer do a transfer.

Have you had any luck yet. My wife got her 2018 MT09 today. Bikes have officially arrived in MN at two other dealers in my area, but after talking to my dealer on Tuesday - still no update beyond 'May'. He's going to talk to his Yamaha rep this week and next week hopefully have some news. Reading between the lines, this dealer does very little bike sales and didn't order any 2018s for their showroom so I think he doesn't have much pull with Yamaha. Trying to be patient. Spring is finally here in MN, and I'd usually wait for a good rainstorm to wash the roads but once I get my R1 back together I'll at least be riding that. I think next week we're going to talk about applying my deposit towards one of the 2017s he has sitting in his warehouse. Hindsight being 20/20, I'd have gone with the 2017 to begin with. But at the time it was only $500 more for the 18 and a good deal at that. We'll see... I'll keep this updated in case it is useful info for someone else down the road.

I would get what you want. Even of you have to go to a different dealer. I know I'm never satisfied when I settle for something else just because I didn't pursue exactly what I was after. Best of luck to you.

Just in case someone has the same question in the future, here's how everything turned out. I ordered the bike back in late March (23rd) and the dealer had not placed any 2018 orders. Initial deliver estimate was May, then in mid-May it switched to June. No info from Yamaha either by calling corporate or the dealer calling his rep beyond what the computer could tell him.
Late May he got a date of June 11th that it should be stateside, then it would get a shipping manifest and finally placed on a truck. June 13th rolls around, call the dealer - date has been changed to June 28th. Just cancelled my order and trying to decide if I still want a 2018 Blue from another dealer that has it on the sales floor, or save $1400 for the first dealer's "I'm sorry" price on a 2017 holdover.
So in my experience, if you are ordering a bike - be prepared to wait. I won't do that again unless the order is going in the year before.

This is the way it was explained to me back when I ordered a first generation R1. If the bike has been built, it could be in a regional warehouse or it could be in Japan. If it hasn't been built, you would have to wait until the assembly line ramps up to build that model since they will assemble x number of say FZ-07s then change over to FZ-09s and then do a run of FZ-10s. I'm sure things have changed since that explanation came from a long time ago, but it's always been pretty near impossible to tell when a bike order will arrive at a specific dealership. As far as getting a 2017 instead of a 2018, If I were in your position I'd look at the changes Yamaha made and see if they were important to me. For example I'd probably ask the first dealer what they would charge to install the quick shifter that's included in the 2018 (If that's something you want) and then look at the difference in out the door price between the '17 and '18.

Based on the timings and how little info they could provide, my assumption was production change over at the plant as well - so my gut says that's a pretty good guess.
I just finally laid eyes on the blue 2018 and I think that's the direction I'm going. The changes between the two are so minor it pretty much doesn't play into it - and I suspect the first dealer with the 2017 would install a quick shifter for free if I asked. But I like having some color on a bike. The 2018 dealer also said he could dealer transfer a 'grey' 2018 which is a maybe for me. The wheels have grown on me, and finally seeing one at a demo I really liked the color of it. Too late today to make the credit union so I'll get some paperwork prepped and hopefully can track down a ride to pick it up Monday or Tuesday. So close...

I had a bit of a wait when buying a Nissan 350z. the dealer was to let me know when my vehicle was arriving from japan..... but once they have a sale it was radio silence. after 3 months I emailed the dealer and under contract I could back out of the sale and im done waiting. 5 minutes later there was a phone call and my car was being processed and will be with me within a couple of days. funny that. the wait is a killer. How is it that not having something, that you have never actually owned can cause so much anger. its all perspective, and in the end I have learnt that my perspective is anger and im still raw 10years later hahaha

For those who might consider dealer transfers, I'd always ask for a bike still in the crate. That way, you don't have to worry about scratches or other damage once you get to your dealer to pick it up. That happened to me. Dealer didn't want to return my full deposit, deducting the shipping, since I was refusing delivery. I told them I wasn't refusing delivery, but merely rejecting a damaged bike. Give me a new one and it's mine. If not, give me my entire deposit back. It wasn't a pleasant experience, so just giving those who are 'anal' like me a heads up. He he. By the way, my dealer has a black leftover 2017, and it's scratched to hell, even on the tiny windscreen. If bike is on the crate, you might only have a warranty issue (like the sidestand recall on 2017s). My dealer says he's waiting on 2019 MT-10s at any time. If I move before they arrive, I'd get an '18 in the crate.
