Newbie here. Just got an FZ10 and I am going through all the threads about good exhaust note vs too loud. I have a Yosh Y-series pipe, cat delete, ftecu flash, and a quick shifter. I love loud bikes, but this thing is way too loud. During my first 3 rides I was harassed twice by cops. And I don't blame them. This thing is stupid loud. I tried the yosh quiet insert and it barely made a difference. It may have made it worse actually. I was going to modify the quiet insert to plug it up some more and quiet it down. A phone call with 2wheeldynoworks determined that plugging exhaust up at the end is the worst for performance. It chokes the life out of the FZ10. He said one of their bikes with a Graves exhaust and a db killer in it dropped the power by 25hp Yes that's right, twenty five freaking horsepower. So plugging it up is a last resort. So I bought a long 1/2 inch drill bit. I drilled two 1/2 inch holes through the sound deadening material inside of the stock cat. That's it. No gutting or chiseling required. It took about 10 seconds a side. Mounted it up. The sound now is very good. Nice rumble but not too loud. 2WDW also told me that the custom stock tune would most likely be best since I have only slightly modded the cat. I now need the reflash since my fueling is now off and snatchy. So I am getting the flash and an autoblipper. I'm hoping for nice smooth off idle performance. Not really to concerned with peak hp as I am with solid smooth torque and ridability. Well that's my newbie story. We'll see how it goes.

I have done a cat delete with a pipewerx exhaust...dont' find it super loud at all. I mean, its loud, but not overbearing like yours seemed to be. Do you ride with plugs?
Surprised you were bothered by cops...near me they harass all the cars, never bikes though, at least from what i've seen and experienced.

Yeah I ride with earplugs. Have been using earplugs for track and street for about 15 years now. Cant ride without them now. Can't concentrate with all that wind noise. Don't get me wrong. I love loud bikes. But at 48 years old I'm just not looking for all that attention. On my second ride I had a park ranger pull into my lane (head on) to cut me off. I almost ended up as a hood ornament on his ranger vehicle. It was close. I barely saved it and I'm a good rider. Yes i was going a little fast but I'm sure it didn't help how damn loud the bike was. I'm in the process of filing a compliant against the ranger. He way overstepped his policy and my safety with that maneuver. Anyway, I think that my cat mod is gonna be the ticket. I sent of my ECU today for a flash and an autoblipper. I'm super excited to get it back.

LET US KNOW HOW THE "CAT MOD" WORKED OUT !!! Maybe post a quick sound clip ? Did you get any error messages or check engine lights after drilling out ?
