Hey guys, I am considering a left over 17 model for sale locally. Currently have a Suzuki DL1000 (2014) and CBR1000rr (08).
The FZ10 is close to my perfect bike being a hybrid of my current rides. My one concern is of course tank range. Where I live it is not uncommon to go in excess of 250km without seeing a gas station. Has anyone experimented with going up a tooth on the front? If so how was range effected? Also what mpg are you guys seeing when running in the lowest power mode?
I only ask because I do longer trips around lake Superior a couple times a year. Range matters. I would far prefer this bike over the Ninja 1000. But tank range might be the deciding factor.
Thanks in advance!
Ps. I guess that was a couple questions lol

Ummmm, yeah...you picked the one real negative about this bike. I can squeeze 130 miles of mild hwy riding out of mine before the light starts flashing. Other than that, best damn real world commuter out there IMHO. I saw a guy on YOUTUBE doing a luggage review, he kept a half gallon or so can in one of his bags lol.

Yeah I personally don't care about the mpg IF it had a larger fuel tank lol (I am more of a smiles per gallon kinda guy). I just can't find anyone who has gone up a tooth anywhere. There is one stretch of highway where I regularly ride that is 260km without fuel, maybe some rotopacks would be the answer.

If you squeeze hard, and don't run at plus 100 mph speeds, you can get 150 miles out of a full tank, that's right at 250km. Plan from there, if that isn't feasible than a) get another bike or b) try to carry some reserve.

Fuel range has been a minor concern of mine, having only 750 miles on my 17. I got a great deal on a leftover in September, my mpg has been 26.8 since I started riding it. This has been without a doubt the most fun easy to ride fast and best commuter bike I have ever owned. You might just want to throw all logic aside and buy the bike, my GSXR750 is sitting unridden and now for sale. I have limited myself to just 2 wheelies per ride, it's been a very difficult compromise.

160km /tank when commuting 200km /tank where 30-40% of ride spent commuting to freeway/highway and then other 60-70% of ride without stop / starts 250+ /tank where riding 100% of the time without stopping on open roads

250km/155mi is really pushing it on a 10. I highly doubt +1 in the front will get you there consistently. You're also taking away from one of the highlights of the bike.
Spare fuel is a better solution, but to be completely honest if I was going to slab 250km, it wouldn't be on the FZ10. My FZ1 would be a much better option for this kind of riding and it has the range to get there on a tank. Have you considered other bikes? Ninja 1000, MT/FZ-09, GSX-S1000, etc?

My lights coming on at 100 miles which is 160 km. Figure I can get another 25 miles which is like 200 km before tank runs dry.
I don't commute, do mostly aggressive Canyon carving type riding so I'm likely the bottom of the spectrum of gas mileage on here. So that's your low range.

I went out for a ride yesterday, almost all two lane country roads at speeds up to 80 mph, but probably averaging about 65 mph. Plenty of hills and dales and corners in the Texas Hill Country around Lukenbach, Sisterdale, Comfort, Kerrville and Hunt areas for those who know the region. My reserve clicked in at 128 miles and at that point I was about 25 miles to the nearest gas station so I set the cruise control at 65 mph and rolled in to the station at 152.9 miles on the odo and it took 4.243 gallons of premium, an average of 36.0 mpg for the tank. If the specs are correct and the tank is a true 4.5 gallons I was getting pretty close to draining it with only about 9 miles of range left. I wasn't babying it but I wasn't murdering it either, pretty average pace for an afternoon out in the country. No matter how you cut it this bike is really not suitable as a sports tourer as you would be stopping every couple of hours for fuel. A break every couple of hours is not a bad idea but I wouldn't want to be looking for fuel that often. This bike really needs to be enjoyed for what it can do, just plan your fuel stops accordingly. Unless you live in remote areas this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have considered other bikes but the FZ10 ticked a lot of buckets for me (not a Kawi, cruise, good amount of power etc). It seems the closest competition that suits my needs is the new Ninja 1000. Another option is the KTM 1090 Adventure S (not 'R') but it is only rumored to be coming to Canada and has not been confirmed. It's down on power (125 ish I believe) but is a very quality machine. Or just keep the two I have, would like to get down to one insurance payment though. I'll keep my eyes on these forums though to see if re-flashing or anything else improves the FZ's mileage. Crazy to think my VW GTI with over 300hp to the wheels gets 40mpg on the highway.

KTM's can be great but they aren't the strongest steed in the paddock. I've had good luck with Yamaha's for over 20 years and my local dealer is only 23 miles away so I try to stay with them and they always have something in their line that keeps me interested.

Yep, I'd say 250km + on a tank on open road in cruise control at 110km/hour will do the trick but as you say it's not realistic...It's more a max target under perfect circumstances for someone interested in getting the most mileage over fun... After 10,000km on the ODO I'm averaging 8.1litres per hundred. And so I'm averaging 200'ish per tank(dry). I'm visiting the servo more than I'd like but am always within reach of fuel. With regards to my MT-10 I'm looking to upgrade to next years model....but only because I want to stay current. Aside from some niggles with regards to ticks and rattles, the bikes absolutely perfect!

I rode a loop of about 255miles yesterday, I stopped before and filled up, from a previous ride, I got 33mpg, next stop was after 40 miles of interstate, I got 36mpg, next stop was after 74 miles of fairly spirited riding the mile was 29mpg, I then rode 106miles home, about a mile from home the reserve counter came on, I plan for fuel stops at 100mile intervals or anytime I stop I try to fill up. The fuel mileage is the biggest negative with the bike, the seat could be better, at the end of my ride my yesterday, I was wishing for a better seat, I see a seat concepts in my list of to do things over the winter. It was about as perfect a day to ride yesterday that you could want temps were upper 70's, no humidity and the other than the 1st 40 miles, the rest was all 2 lane twisties, good ride. I'm headed out today but I'm forcing myself to ride one of my other bikes.

If you are worried about the fuel economy then get the Ninja 1000. I came off a 14 Ninja 1000 and absolutely loved that bike. The FZ10 is more fun but the ninja does everything really well touring to sport riding to just cruising around. The FZ is more about getting on and going fast all the time.

Just stumbled on this Old thread but couldn’t help but revive it. I’m lucky if I get 130km out of a tank, never mind miles. The hell am I doing wrong 😂

I've done about 7000km on my MT-10SP, the majority is country riding at 120-140km/hr with few stops, and I tend to get around 17km/L and usually plan on filling up around 240km. However, if there is much stop/start town riding involved then the fuel consumption is pretty awful, around 10-11 km/L seems to be fairly typical.

The fuel light comes on around 120/130km with the initial half tank bar on the fuel gauge dropping around 70-80km. Once the fuel light comes on and starts flashing what are people tending to get? Perhaps I’m just filling up way too soon?

Perhaps I’m just filling up way too soon? I'm getting about 115 miles/185 km between fill-ups. I'll put about 12 or so miles (~19km) on it once it starts flashing and the fuel trip pops up. My commute is probably 50/50 city/highway with lots of hills and traffic lights. I have a decat and an ECU flash as well. According to my fill ups I'm averaging 27.8 MPG (8.46 l/100km) since new and I'm a hair over 3000 miles on the bike now. She's thirsty for sure! www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/yamaha/mt-10/2019/willl84/1024567I'm actually considering trading it for a 1290SDR. For whatever reason insurance on the MT-10 is CRAZY high (and it's not just me) and the SDR is averaging closer to 40MPG: www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/ktm/1290_super_duke_r

Even the R1 seems to have better mileage. I was on a trip in the West of Ireland 2 years ago and nearly got caught out something terrible looking for somewhere to refuel. All well and good having shit mileage if all you’re doing is the same route or the same familiar Sunday blast but when you go somewhere unfamiliar you can be caught out easily. On that same trip I was with a mate on a GS. For every 4 times I stopped to fill up he filled once. Both of us doing the same speeds, same mileage etc. Granted the tank is bigger but he was getting twice the mpg if not more.

Normal mixed riding I get ~33MPG. When I tour and just cruise I can get close to 40MPG if I am careful.
I've gotten over 140 miles out of a tank of gas easily.
In my experience it is all in throttle application. If you can stick to 30% or less throttle then the MPG's are decent bordering on good. Anything above 30% throttle and the bike is thirsty.
