Ok, my question is about fuel tank capacity. Is the tank 4.5 gal WITH the fuel pump installed? Or 4.5 gal BEFORE the fuel pump is installed?

I think it'd be safe to assume 4.5 with the tank ready to fuel, with the pump.
Why is this so important? The pump would only take up 8-12oz of volume. You'd get more fuel in the tank than that by holding it upright when fueling.

It's only important to me because of doing my calculations for how far a tank of gas could take me in a pinch. If I'm doing calculations for 4.5 gal when it's only 4.3 gal of gas with the pump, well.......

There is so much leeway in your question that you won't be able to accurately measure how far you are going to go on a tank. Was the tank filled to the brim previously, upright or on sidestand, was it temperature compensated (most likely not), what is the true tank capacity that you can actually draw out with the engine running, what is the error rate on your odometer, what is your true mpg (don't rely on the built in gauge, it is optimistic). All of these factors will effect how far you will really go on a tank which will make an accurate calculation very difficult and probably not that accurate.

I've run out of gas before on this thing. You have approx. 25 miles once the reserve kicks in.

I always fill my tank with it upright not on the stand. I also always set my trip and use that with the gas gage. Other than the actual capacity of the tank, knowing how much the fuel pump can pick up would be nice, but that is a very technical question that would be harder to find someone who knows. I can say that the fuel gage and mpg readings are pretty accurate in my bike, only slightly optimistic.
