As title states, anyone know if I have to drain the engine oil before replacing the alternator case cover?

I replaced a stator one time on another bike and didn't need to replace the oil. Just checked it after to top off. Probably the same for the alternator? The oil sits in the oil pan when the engines off. Only stuff in the alternator should be residual oil.
